Upholding and expanding the PATRIOT anti-civil-liberties legislation and offically sanctioning the crimes of torturers also means that officially now Freedom Is Slavery.

All that's left to sanctify is Ignorance Is Strength.

Just laughing that one of the more smug posters on DU didn't see the irony.

5. Is peace always the best option?
Were the tories right during the revolutionary war, were those who argued to let Hilter do whatever he wanted correct, is it wrong to do anything about genocide in Darfur or Bosnia. If someone is being killed outside your apt is peace letting them die while you turn up your tv to watch your show?

I don't know the answers. However the slogan Peace is meaningless if solutions are not given as to how to accomplish "real peace"

25. Well, to be a little contrarian
Edited on Thu Dec-10-09 09:18 PM by Ken Burch
Had the Loyalists prevailed, slavery would have been abolished here in 1808 rather than 1862, we'd have avoided the War of 1812 AND the Civil War, and today we'd all be covered under the the National Health Service and have a much stronger trade union movement. The state that emerged in 1789 was a reactionary, bloodthirsty and hate-driven society, devoted to priveleging the few, impoverishing the many, and obliterating all who weren't members of the white "Christian" minority. It was the most right-wing "revolution" in history, and it didn't begin to be redeemed until the work of the abolitionists in the mid-19th Century, the suffragists, socialists and trade unionsts shortly thereafter, and the antibigotry movement of the 20th Century finally restored a bit of humanity to that alleged "revolution".

As to Hitler, he would likely never have come to power had it not been for the way Germany was treated at Versailles(and that treatment was at the hands of the winning militarist faction in the war, not pacifists) and most of those who oppose war today would have backed the left and the antifascist movements in Europe, unlike the Establishment of this country that traded with the Reich and refused to listen to the warnings about what might happen if the Nazis were treated as a legitimate German government. And, had the democratic post-World War I government been allowed a clean slate, had it been treated with half the magnanimity that was shown to the morally compromised "Christian Democrat" government of post-World War II "West Germany" rather than being crippled with reparations payments, it would have survived and it would have likely avoided the insanely aggressive foreign policy of the "anti-communist" state that succeeded it in 1933.

On Darfur, well, we'd all like to do something, but who would we fight and what would we put in place after overthrowing the current Sudanese government? It would hardly be an improvement to leave them with the current political structure of Iraq or Afghanistan, which appear to be the only kind of states American force can put in power.

The answers will be found when we, as a country, finally make a genuine effort to work with other countries to resolve disputes through compromise and negotiation, rather than insisting on giving everyone else on the planet the choice between war or surrendering to us without a fight.

6. The banners are being printed in China.
By slave labor workers who recently finished
a batch of American flags for shipment to Afghanistan.

"Ignorance is Strength" is currently in its final stages
here on DU.

21. I think the pile-on is evident.
But like I said, at this point,
I don't really give a fuck.
Y'all can have him, chew him up and
spit him out whole.

Bill Clinton did a whole lot of fucked up things for 8 fucking years,
and he wasn't barbecued like this by his own side; not even close!
Hell, his wife was even able to run for Senate and a close run for the Presidency!
So he was able to sign DOMA, NAFTA, DADT, failed us on Health Care, the Telecommunications act,
Repeal Glass–Steagall, give us a welfare piece of shit of a bill, have his wars in Kosovo and Haiti, ignore Rwanda, and don't get me started on his personal failings, and he's still "the Bubba!" was given two terms!

Barack Obama inherits the worse fucked up mess imaginable,
and he's shit on a stick without a stick in less than a year!

Can you imagine if something really went wrong under Obama's watch?
The man would be lynched from the nearest tree, questions asked after the fact.

I'm sorry, but I can no longer explain it all away.
I see it clearly, and so do others.

23. Isn't there any room between those who support everything Obama does
and those who blame him for everything? Is it not possible for some to have legitimate beefs with Obama without lumping them in with those who cannot seem to support anything he does?

33. On an upshot, I suspect it's mainly Americans who are this ridiculously ignorant
... at least I like to think there's intelligent life out there...somewhere

I mean, I realize it has more to do w/brainwashing, and corporate culture ideals and value$ that warp Americans into abiding such astonishingly fucked up belief systems, and isn't strictly a matter of intelligence, per se. However...
