Governor threatens to veto education billPublished: Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009 - 2:51 pm
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said this afternoon that he will veto Assembly Bill X5 8 if it reaches his desk. The bill, favored by unions, was passed by the Assembly Committee on Education yesterday and is set for a floor vote today.
"We must make the necessary reforms to improve our schools and make California highly competitive for this federal education funding," Schwarzenegger said in a news release. "The Assembly bill is a step backwards and, if it reaches my desk, it will be vetoed."
Senate Bill X5 1, favored by education advocates and the governor, failed when it couldn't garner the nine votes needed to move forward.
Both bills outline plans to meet federal requirements for winning a share of the $4.35 billion Race to the Top funds being offered to the nation's schools.
