Va. has a nuke plant event

For the second time in less than seven weeks, a problem has prompted the shutdown of one of the two nuclear reactors at Dominion Virginia Power’s North Anna Power Station. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission this morning said Unit 2 was shut down yesterday after a problem was detected in an electrical supply breaker. The incident occurred at 2:23 p.m., and the NRC was notified about three hours later. Dominion told the NRC it would also notify authorities in Louisa County, where the power station is located, some 45 miles northwest of Richmond. The Richmond-based utility told the NRC there was no known leakage during the event. The reactor remained shut down today. On Oct. 23, Dominion shut down North Anna’s Unit 1 reactor after two leaks were detected in water pipes. Unit 1, which was shut down for several days following that event, was operating at full power during yesterday’s shutdown of Unit 2 and remained at 100 percent of capacity today.
