NYPD tracks gun in deadly Timews Square shootout

NEW YORK (AP) — The mayor railed against gun violence on Friday, one day after a street peddler died in a shootout with police outside a hotel in bustling Times Square.

A machine pistol used by a street hustler and aspiring rapper shot dead in a Times Square gunfight was purchased from a Virginia gun shop by a woman who reported it stolen 10 days after she bought it, authorities said.

Raymond Martinez, who wrote songs about staring down cops in Times Square and hawked CDs to tourists, was carrying a stolen Mac-10 pistol and a pocketful of business cards from Virginia gun dealers — including the one where the gun was purchased — when he was killed by a plainclothes officer near the Marriott Marquis hotel, police said. The handgun, which held 30 rounds, jammed after Martinez got off three shots.

Jordan Kelsey-Stewart, 25, bought the weapon Oct. 18 from Dale's Guns in Powhatan, Va., chief NYPD police spokesman Paul Browne said Friday. Officials with Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are trying to find her and are investigating whether she had any connection to Martinez; a telephone listing for her could not immediately be found on Friday.

1. The jam is not suprising, since the MAC-10 is a piece of crap.
Also, it is not a "machine pistol" unless it is fully automatic. The article doesn't seem to say whether it was full-auto or only semi-automatic.

9. but, but,
Not sure of the term used to describe this type of statement:

"The MAC-10 is a handheld submachine gun that weighs about 6 pounds, can hold 30 bullets in its magazine and fire more than 1,000 rounds a minute."

I agree with your assessment on the MAC-10, ergonomics are horrible too (at least to me).

6. OMFG, according to Bloomberg (and countless other dimwits), the perp
could've fired 500rds in under 1 minute with *that*. :sarcasm:

MAC-10 =

*Apologies to Mr. Ingram if that is an actual NFA M10.

15. Because there is nothing funny about the proliferation of guns...
And, unfortunately the gun makers and sellers hide behind the Second Amendment to flood the market.

21. If he could reload instantly I suppose it's technically possible...
All the talk about 'foo rounds per minute' usually goes out of its way to ignore the fact that magazines traditionally don't contain five hundred or a thousand rounds, and as a result would need to be replaced moments into that minute and several times afterwards.

5. If they are the word "machine" in the broad term, then I guess they are right to call it that.
Much like someone calling a gun a tool. *shrug* don't know

10. More like "Resold ten days after purchase."
That why limiting the number of purchases per month is such a bad idea... :sarcasm:

18. Prosecute them.
If the law was to be actually enforced on a regular basis, the fear of prosecution might start to exist.

13. What a fine upstanding citizen.
And Bloomberg has the audacity to blame access to firearms...

MANHATTAN — Guns, drugs, prostitutes and an endless stream of expletives filled the rap lyrics — and the life — of Raymond Martinez, the Times Square gunman who shot off two rounds from his MAC 10 before an NYPD officer took him down late Thursday morning.

When he wasn’t running CD scams on tourists in Times Square, the 25-year-old Bronx native — rap name “Ready” — was likely hanging with his buddies, drinking, smoking pot and laying down tracks, according to his friends.

“I’ll break your legs, have your brains looking like eggs,” Martinez raps in one song.

“Square Free” has a MySpace page with several images of their front man, Martinez. In a chilling harbinger of things to come, one image was digitally altered to make it look like Martinez was standing in the blood-spattered entryway of his apartment building with a machine gun lying at his feet.

Another picture shows him smoking what appears to be marijuana and a third is a cartoonish depiction of a man carrying a huge gun with a caption reading “THEM SUCKERS AINT TAKIN ME NO WHERE…”

Martinez’s friends say he was also a pimp, sometimes with as many as 10 prostitutes in his employ. According to one friend, he was particularly gifted at convincing women to go out and turn tricks for him.

people breaking laws (in the weed case stupid ones) make choices and break the law. Weed, which is banned, still seems to make its way into zigzags in the us.
