Lieberman: Dems Haven't Given Up Enough On Health Care
Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) encouraged Democratic leadership in the Senate to wipe health care legislation clean of provisions held dear by progressives (and the majority of Democrats) in order to get reform passed on a bipartisan basis.

Appearing on "Face the Nation" this Sunday, the Connecticut independent said he thought the chamber could pass legislation this week if it just took "a few things out" first. Those things: a public option for insurance coverage (which is already gone), a provision that would expand Medicare to those as young as 55, and a new national insurance program that would help finance long-term care (known as the CLASS Act.)

"We've got to stop adding to the bill," said Lieberman. "We have to start subtracting some controversial things. I think the only way to get this done before Christmas is to bring in some Republicans who are open minded on this like Olympia Snowe..."

7. And while we're at it, lets get rid of Medicare so everyone
will have to purchase private insurance so all the insurance companies in CT can gouge the population and make huge donations to Joe.

8. I suffer from hypertension so I avoid thinking about Loserman
True story: I have a blood pressure monitor that I can use at home. A few months ago I took a reading just before Countdown came on TV, It was 118/79. Then I watched Joe make some bullshit statement on Countdown. I started to cuss and my wife said "Watch your blood pressure". So I thought, "Hmm, I wonder." So I went and took another measurement - 130/88.

There you have it. Empirical evidence that paying attention to this asshole is detrimental to your health.

13. He's been out of the party since 2006
And openly campaigned for the old lunatic and the younger lunatic last year. So I don't know why the fuck anyone still takes him seriously.

Damn Connecticut for not having the law on the books that most other states have - when you lose a primary, you should be OUT of that election, period.

19. Joe's preferred bill would be very short
1) Mandates for everyone to buy private insurance. No mandate for employers
2) No subsidies to people to help with premiums
3) No expansion of Medicaid. In fact get rid of it and make those people buy private, also
4) No limit on premiums or out of pocket costs
5) Very low annual and lifetime caps on coverage
6) Keep recissions going strong
7) Fine of 25% of income for refusing to buy private insurance.
8) Turn Medicare over to the private, Medicare Advantage Programs and require seniors to buy from them. Keep the subsidies in place for the MA programs

21. I thought that the *Public Option* was the main sticking point
Edited on Sun Dec-13-09 04:04 PM by Proud Liberal Dem
Isn't there basic agreement on everything but THAT? I thought the PO was Joe's big "problem" with it and that's what he threatened to filibuster HCR over. Well, regrettably, the PO is essentially *dead* at this point, so what's he saying is his problem now?

I guess that whole adage about giving an inch.................:eyes: *ugh!*

At this point, "Traitor Joe" needs to sit down, STFU, and let the bill come to the floor for a vote. When it comes to the floor, he can vote against it (and his constituents) if he wants to but the Democrats in the Senate had better get ready to kick him and his chairmanships to the curb if he continues to throw roadblocks in the way of HCR getting an up-or-down vote in the Senate.

God, he sucks! Why can't everybody drop the "let's pretend Joe is a loyal Democrat except on foreign policy" act and just admit that he has crossed over to the dark side and would probably be much more comfortable in the Republican Party right at this point?

:puke:

24. Kind of how it's been going. As soon as the Blue Dogs win one concession, they move the bar
I look for them to keep it up til there's nothing left but a mandate. I'm not even sure the provision which forbids insurance companies to cover those with preexisting conditions will survive. Another thing ripe for picking off would be the employer mandates.

i was opposed to letting him keep his chairmanships after the last election - but i bit my lip about that one. so why do we keep him around now? oh yeah, 60 filibuster-proof seats. oh, nevermind.

The only thing he is right about in this entire article is that if we win over Snowe we don't need his traitorous ass in the coalition to pass health care reform.

Edited on Sun Dec-13-09 07:02 PM by Proud Liberal Dem
only to lose to Loserman- who only "won" because he was able to bring in the *Independent* and GOP vote!

He would've been a much better Senator IMHO. I hate people who play games with the system like what Lieberman did in that election but I guess it was legal under Connecticut law and the voters spoke, so the rest of us are just going to have to live with their decision. *sigh* :eyes:

33. Lieberman and his extreme right crowd are secretly Republicans
That's the only possible explanation for his behavior. He wants to help the Republicans.

Obama's reputation is staked on getting a decent health care reform bill with a public option or the Medicare alternative. If those specific provisions do not pass, Obama will be history. So will the Democratic Congress.

This is sabotage of the party. Reid would be smarter to force this -- to expel those Democrats who do not support these basic provisions from the party. Let them join the Republican Party. See how long they pass the stringent right-wing test for a true Republican.

Obama is getting nothing, doing nothing that he promised to do. He has to come out and embarrass and ostracize the Democrats who are fighting him. I've lived a long time. When I was young I thought you could let others have their way all the time and persuade them with reason to compromise. I found out the hard way that life does not work like that. When you face self-righteous hypocrites like Lieberman or Evan Bayh, Nelson, etc., you have to say "No." And when you say "No," you have to understand the consequences.

Obama will win a lot of trust from the American people if he just finally, for once, says what he once and refuses to budge.

He needs to watch the Dog Whisperer regularly every day for about 6 weeks. He is either the pack leader or he will find himself whimpering in a corner. We elected him to lead the administration. We did not elect Lieberman, Rahm Emmanuel, Timothy Geithner, Olympia Snowe or Ben Bernanke to lead.

Obama, be the pack leader for once, please.

35. Joe is a Republican. Why can't they face that fact?
And they should treat him as such. Any statements he excretes are to be treated as if they came direct from RNC headquarters.

Joe Lieberman will vote NO on ANY health care reform bill.

.

Why is any attention paid to him on this issue? His is a PERMANENTLY lost vote.
