I viewed this as a biting commentary:
A couple of days ago in the "Heloise" hints column, somebody wrote in about a problem with a skunk under their porch that they solved by leaving a boom box on the porch all night, turned up, and tuned to talk radio. By morning the skunk was gone.
The only comment from "Heloise" was essentially, "says something about talk radio".
There's a lot of truth in that. If even a skunk can't tolerate it, why do humans?

1. because they are brainwashed (or rinsed, at any rate) not to know better. |

I seriously think someone ought to investigate the sublims in these programs.

3. I don't know that it is all that subliminal. |

My mother (fundie) listens to that conspiracy show, what is it "Coast to Coast" or something? They've apparently covered a few legitimate issues, like when they had Katherine Albrecht of CASPIAN on to talk about RFID chips and privacy erosion. Those seem to be few and far between. She's been all worried about weird shit that just makes me shake my head and try to forget I heard anything about it. I've suggested that she just try sleeping.

7. last year, I was visiting a friend with no cable, so only networks and cluster-faux available |
|
the stuff was so clearly stupid that it was beyond me that anybody could take it seriously.

9. Yeah, but FOX is beyond stupid - for example... |
|
A local bar had it on one afternoon. My wife and I used to go there when she got off from work at 1:30 and they'd let me change the channel if we were the only ones there or everyone agreed. FOX was usually on initially because the owner is a "reluctant Republican". He's a nice guy, not brainwashed, just a lifelong Republican.
Anyway, one afternoon we were at the bar and another couple was at a table behind us. This was the day there was the shooting in southern NY state. There were several amusing components to what was on the tube. First, the guy doing the constant babble said, "We haven't used the term "hostage situation" in over an hour and a half. I loudly exclaimed, "OH BULLSHIT!" The banner 30 seconds before he said that read "HOSTAGE SITUATION IN NEW YORK". Right after I said that, the same banner was back on the screen and I said, "SEE, SEE!" We were all rolling in laughter. That made it hard to figure out exactly what was going on, but there was a complete disconnect between what was on the bottom of the screen (words) and what he was saying. Essentially, the words said something was going on or announced and the babble-head was saying they had no idea, asked his "computer tech guru" who also had no idea, and we were laughing so hard at that point I had to change the channel so we could drink our beer. This was all going on in one of their "tech room" settings where they've got a bunch of extras sitting in front of computers (probably on Facebook) and flat screen TVs all over the wall.

10. To be fair, I've never listened to it myself. But some of the shit my fundie Mom has described... |
|
... is too bizarre to describe. Of course, she also listens to Rush and only watches FOX, so there's a built in kooky filter. She recently told me that Obama (personally) had declared ANY amount (anything > 0.0ppm) of CO2 to be poisonous to humans. I simply told her that's not at all what it means and pointed out that air actually has CO2 in it. Then, as is usually wise with such silliness, I changed the subject.

12. Yes,some shows do border on the bizarre, |
|
But a lot of them are on the more realistic side.
George Noory (The current commentator) is a bit less nutty than Art Bell.
And one has to remember what target audience the show is aimed at...those that are awake between 1 Am and 5 Am
Perfect for the Stoner Crowd,lol

I'm usually in bed much earlier now. The days of shutting down bars are LONG over.

They had a rather fascinating show the other night about American ghost towns and the history of one particular one in Massachusetts. Creepy and historical.
But when Noory brings on idiots like Alex Jones or Jerome Corsi, off it goes......

I used to listen to Air America Radio when Franken was on and Randi followed. It was okay while I was working in the garden. I don't think I've had it on since Franken left.

14. There wasn't enough talk radio in the 70s to do the trick |
|
so I threw a large handful of mothballs under the shed where the skunks had taken up residence.
That did the trick, too.

19. Skunks Hate Talk Radio but love Rock And Roll!!!! |
|
Bless their little hearts!
Just a warning for those with Skunk in your area... keep the Rock and Roll to a minimum...
Otherwise you'll end up with Skunk mosh pits on the patio...
