Poll question: DU.......Where are You? (Geographic Distribution of DU Survey)
Edited on Mon Dec-14-09 02:19 PM by marmar
What region of the country do you live in? (AS in right now, not where you hail from originally).....And no, the geographic groupings won't be perfect, but humor me.... :)

Me: The Motor City, in the great state of Michigan, in the Great Lakes region.

22. Yeah it is. Arkansas is more of a southern state, though
Texas is a mix. The east part is like the south, the west part fits with New Mexico and Arizona, and the north is more of a midwest state. A lot of times when these regional divisions will just put Texas by itself. That keeps us from pouting so much.

33. I thought that was pretty funny, too
And the name of the "region" is "Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas," instead of something like "heartland." it should really be called "Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas," in my opinion.

btw, I'm from rural Arkansas, lived in Oklahoma and Texas several years apiece, and now live in Brooklyn (praise Jeebus).

Born in the phosphate center of the state, came to Tallahassee for college and stayed. After I graduated, I bought an old semi-abandoned pig farm, cleaned it up and have made it into a horse farm. I'm not too happy with the politics of the state but I love where I live. At least this county is pretty much liberal though we keep having to fight the developers to keep the countryside from being destroyed.

55. It's true...Paris is an endlessly
fascinating city and perhaps the most beautiful in the world in terms of human endeavor (as opposed to geographical setting). But, make no mistake, marmar, it's city that requires money (and lots of it) to live in. I couldn't possibly afford to live in the cinquième arrondissement nowadays (although I did live in a sort of "squat" in the 5e in my early days here). :hi: SG

especially for accommodation--hotels and B&Bs will kill you there, not to mention transport costs (Underground tickets, yikes!). But, for native Londoners, the salary scale is generally a good deal higher than in Paris, so I guess that's how they manage. SG

71. Paris does have a way
of roping you in--but when you're into the daily routine (or "train-train quotidien" as the French say), you tend to lose some awareness of the breathtaking beauty of the place. Then you come around a corner or over a hill and suddently find yourself face to face with an amazing sight. That's when you remember what kept you here in the first place. :hi: SG

But my job has me stationed in Europe, and while I'm here I hang my hat in the German Rheinland, with
this cool little bit of architecture from the year 973 (no "1") that some forgotten nobleman had the
good graces to put in what was to become my back yard some thousand years later:

My wife is German, so she is perfectly happy to live and work in her home country. As I am in a different
country practically every day for work, Germany is very centrally located for me, so we're both happy. I still
send my (usually useless) absentee vote every November. Someday, we'll have a Democratic Senator or governor
again. ("I may not get there with ya......")

82. Yup. Haven't been back in a few years....
I've still got some cousins there, but the rest of my Windsor family has either moved near Toronto, or has moved on in a more permanent sense. :hi:

86. lower Hudson Valley in New York . . .
the Hudson, btw, is one of the prettiest and most majestic rivers in the world . . . there are sections of the river that rival even the Danube for their beauty . . . I've sailed every inch of the Hudson from Albany to New York, and it's a totally engaging experience . . .

many thanks to Pete Seeger for initiating the effort that began cleaning up the river and making it accessible to Hudson Valley residents 40 years ago with the launching of the Hudson River sloop CLEARWATER . . . I was at the launching in South Bristol, Maine, on May 17, 1969 . . . and thanks to Pete also for making me aware of the environment as an issue to be concerned about and to fight for . . . and he's still doing it at 90 years of age! . . .
