Comprehensive Immigration Reform, A.S.A.P.-Immigration Reform Bill hits the House tomorrow.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rep-luis-gutierrez/comprehensive-immigration_b_391372.html

from Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), member-Congressional Hispanic Caucus and Congressional Progressive Caucus

"Tomorrow, December 15, I will join the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and my colleagues in the House of Representatives in introducing a progressive, compassionate and comprehensive immigration reform bill."

"We've waited for laws that don't stop at securing our border, but go further to secure our economy, protect our workforce and recognize the proud tradition of immigrants seeking the American Dream. We've waited for it to be taken up by this Congress and our President. And the time for waiting is over."

"CIR ASAP prioritizes the best of what our nation values: family, civil rights, economic opportunity and diversity. It is the product of months of collaboration with human rights advocates, labor organizations, and members of Congress. Already, the Congressional Progressive Caucus, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus and members of the Congressional Black Caucus have endorsed it as a solution to both stem illegal immigration and promote legal migration that will protect and strengthen our nation's economic and national security."

"During the campaign, Barack Obama made a commitment to push for real, comprehensive immigration reform. As President, he's reaffirmed that promise to the nation and to me personally. I'm also very encouraged by the support of Speaker Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Reid. I intend to work with them and members of Congress on both sides of the aisle to make sure that promises made to the American people are promises kept."

It will be interesting to see if Obama had a hand in the crafting of this bill and will push it or if he will come up with his own bill next year.

1. FFS Why don't we just hand the midterms to the Republicans?
The Dems shouldn't even be TALKING about this right now. It doesn't matter if the bill is decent or not, the opposition will spin the shit out of it.

2. Totally off my radar screen
With 10% unemployment, you will forgive me if it is not my highest priority to legitimize a huge supply of cheap labor workers who will drive down wages and benefits for American workers and people who are here legally.

People in the country illegally are asked nicely to please go home and wait their turn before we allow them the privilege of being allowed to come to America.

4. The Endless Torrent of Immigration benefits the Corporatists/Rich.
Elitist Democrats will say that the illegals will eventually give them more votes, but then with the latest performance of the Demo-Rats with respect to passing anything anti-corporate/pro-regular citizen, I would say why would anyone want to benefit these Demo Rat Republican-Lite corporate whores? Unemployment/poor house for us (via labor arbitrage), but the Democratic politicians will have jobs and get rich from the bribes/connections.

5. Organized labor and the Progressive Caucus are behind Obama's reform framework.
I'm not sure if Labor has come out publicly in support of Gutierrez' bill yet, although the Progressive Caucus has. In general, organized labor has taken the position that legalizing them makes these workers less exploitable and easier to organize.

"Change to Win And AFL-CIO Unveil Unified Immigration Reform Framework"

http://www.changetowin.org/for-the-media/press-releases-and-statements/change-to-win-and-afl-cio-unveil-unified-immigration-reform-framework.html

"The plan adheres to the Administration's goals by creating a framework that deals with the critical components of reform and does it through interconnected initiatives. The proposal calls for: (1) an independent commission to assess and manage future flows, based on labor market shortages that are determined on the basis of actual need; (2) a secure and effective worker authorization mechanism; (3) rational operational control of the border; (4) adjustment of status for the current undocumented population; and (5) improvement, not expansion, of temporary worker programs, limited to temporary or seasonal, not permanent, jobs."

6. Two views of the proposal-Right Side News & Progress Illinois

From Right Side News:

"Gutierrez to Introduce Amnesty Bill Tuesday

On Tuesday, December 15, open borders advocate Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) will introduce a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives that, if passed, would grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens in the United States. (Rep. Gutierrez Press Release; National Council of La Raza (NCLR) Press Release, December 11, 2009). According to Gutierrez, his bill "will set a liberal standard in the debate." (Roll Call, December 7, 2009)."

"FAIR has also learned that the Gutierrez amnesty bill will include at least a portion of the "Reuniting Families Act" (H.R. 2709), legislation sponsored by Rep. Mike Honda (D-CA). This legislation would dramatically increase legal immigration..."

From Progress Illinois:

"In October, Gutierrez took a step forward when he he outlined the 10 principles he sees as essential to a fair (and politically viable) overhaul of the nation's broken immigration laws, describing "justice for immigrants" as "today's civil rights struggle." Tomorrow, he'll take the next step.

At a noon-time news conference on Capitol Hill, Gutierrez plans to unveil the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America’s Security and Prosperity Act of 2009 (CIR ASAP). At his side will be fellow-Illinois Rep. Jan Schakowsky, along with other members of the Progressive, Hispanic, Black, and Asian Pacific American caucuses."

7. Watch corporate Democrats turn this bill into a pile of dog shit as bad as the health care bill.
Watch and see how many poisonous amendments that they tack onto this bill. They're gonna load it up with corporate subsidies and tax abatement for big companies.
