Poll Reveals Depth and Trauma of Joblessness in U.S.
More than half of the nation’s unemployed workers have borrowed money from friends or relatives since losing their jobs. An equal number have cut back on doctor visits or medical treatments because they are out of work.

Almost half have suffered from depression or anxiety. About 4 in 10 parents have noticed behavioral changes in their children that they attribute to their difficulties in finding work.

Joblessness has wreaked financial and emotional havoc on the lives of many of those out of work, according to a New York Times/CBS News poll of unemployed adults, causing major life changes, mental health issues and trouble maintaining even basic necessities.

The results of the poll, which surveyed 708 unemployed adults from Dec. 5 to Dec. 10 and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points, help to lay bare the depth of the trauma experienced by millions across the country who are out of work as the jobless rate hovers at 10 percent and, in particular, as the ranks of the long-term unemployed soar.

"Come on now. You proles know the routine. Pull yourselves up by your own freaking bootstraps and shit like that. Ha ha. Times are tough all over. I pay over $100 bucks a piece for these bootlegged Cuban cigars. Hey now, that's a stiffie even for a republicon propaganda crony like me who is pulling in $40 million coporate payola a year to tell you proles the way to think. Ha ha. Smirk."

3. Poverty Destroys Families
faster than anything else I know. It shatters adults and scars children forever. It sets the groundwork for fascism and extreme forms of cultural or religious violence. Poverty -- real, starving poverty -- is just as much of a threat as cancer....but I guess one look at the healthcare debate settles the question of how well we tackle that challenge, though.

5. The 10% number is a BS number too.
Many people have just given up, resigned to a life of poverty. My neighbor and friend has been out of work for over a year and soon he will lose his house. They can pay rent, because his wife has a good job but they got stuck in a bad mortgage, so soon they'll just have to move and now they'll have a foreclosure on their record. No one will work with this family of 6.

It's hard out here in the real world, and it's just getting harder.

9. Yup
More depression, anxiety and insomnia is a real problem.

Personally, I don't even have it that bad. I'm fairly healthy, no children, no mortgage, I can live with family, I qualify for UI, I have little debt, I'm fairly young. But I'm still struggling emotionally. People who have all those issues (no family to rely on, bad health, kids, a mortgage, no UI, tons of debt, being 50+ and running into problem in the job market) have got to be miserable.

10. From personal experience and acquaintance, I agree
That's why I have so little tolerance for the attitude of superiority coming from the republicon fatcats who flushed America's economy down the crapper.

11. It was bipartisan
Repealing Glass-steagall in the 90s was bipartisan, and Clinton signed the bill.
