Bothwell to talk about atheism, 'post-theism'

ASHEVILLE — A newly elected city councilman's beliefs are continuing to draw national attention, including a planned spot tonight on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show.

Cecil Bothwell has gotten widespread attention after opponents wanted him barred from office because they say he doesn't believe in God. The Associated Press wrote a story, a Wikipedia page has been created and now a national television talk show host is courting him, Bothwell said in a press release.

The show is set to air at 9:45 p.m.

Other planned appearances include two radio shows.

The first is with nationally syndicated radio show host Bill Press at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. The show will be aired on 880 AM The Revolution.

The second is 5 p.m. Wednesday with local radio show host Matt Mittan on 570 AM.

Opponents say Bothwell, who was elected this fall to city government, cannot take office because the state constition bars anyone who denies the existance of God from serving.

Legal experts though say the U.S. Constition overules the state constition with a clause saying there will be no religious test for office.

Bothwell at one time described himself as an atheist, but said he now sees himself as a "post-theist."

but, the article was wrong, she interviewed an ACLU lawyer about the case, not Mr. Bothwell himself.
