Canada wants armed ships in Arctic waters
Canada wants armed ships in Arctic waters

OTTAWA, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Canada wants to arm Coast Guard ships in Arctic waters with "deck weaponry capable of giving firm notice" Canada controls the territory, officials say.

The proposal is controversial because, while Canada considers the Northwest Passage part of its "internal waters," the Unites States, the European Union and others assert the sea route is an "international straight" beyond Canadian jurisdiction, Canwest News Service reported Monday.

The Canadian Senate committee making the proposal urges Canada's federal government to "proactively engage the United States in bilateral discussions" to resolve a long-running dispute on the status of the Northwest Passage, the news agency said.

"As the Arctic grows in strategic and economic importance, Canada needs to do more to ensure control of shipping in northern waters," said Liberal Sen. Bill Rompkey, chairman of the committee. "Full control over Arctic waters is a matter of sovereignty."

2. lol... Maybe we can arm them with Harper at the helm... (Or was that Harpo)
Canada as an aggressor just does not sit well with me. Canada used to be a peaceful nation until the 911 shit went down and they acquired a Conservative (minority) Govt.

9. Harper just uses the arctic to create that patriotic feeling in Canadians. It has
to be manufactured feeling because most people have no connection with Harpo. So they keep going back and back to the arctic.

3. Interesting consequence of global warming
The arctic circle is going to be a very interesting place for many people in the next several decades. Russia stands to benefit the most from global warming if their northern ports are ice-free.

I realize you don't do peace-keeping usually with a Navy and the Lester Pearson connection, but....the RCN is just pitiful, even if it's no longer called the RCN.
