Four Cups of Coffee or Tea Daily Lowers Diabetes Risk
By Ellen Gibson

Dec. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Coffee can now add a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes to a resume of health benefits that grew last week when researchers found the wake-up drink helped against the deadliest form of prostate cancer.

Drinking four cups of coffee, decaf or tea daily can reduce the chances of getting Type 2 diabetes by about 25 percent to 35 percent, according to a study published today in the Archives of Internal Medicine. The researchers reviewed 18 studies of almost 500,000 people.

The analysis found that for each cup of coffee people drank, their likelihood of getting diabetes dropped by 7 percent. On Dec. 8, Harvard researchers reported that men who drank 6 or more cups of coffee a day had a 60 percent lower risk of developing the advanced form of prostate cancer than those who didn’t consume any.

By 2025, about 380 million people worldwide will have Type 2 diabetes, generating “enormous economic, health, and society costs,” said the report from researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia. Identifying the beneficial compounds in the beverages could open new ways to prevent diabetes.

If further research confirms this benefit, doctors may advise patients at risk for diabetes to “increase their consumption of tea and coffee in addition to increasing their levels of physical activity,” wrote the authors of the article, led by Rachel Huxley, an associate professor of medicine at the university’s George Institute for Public Health. ...........(more)

3. Coffee is also great for the liver
A study from Finland showed that the more coffee consumed, the lower the rates of liver disease. And, coffee and tea are great sources of antioxidants.
