Pelosi: Jobs bill by State of the Union

Pelosi: Jobs bill by State of the Union
By Mike Soraghan - 12/15/09 03:45 PM ET

Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the House will vote on a jobs bill Wednesday and she believes President Obama could sign it before his State of the Union address.

Pelosi (D-Calif.) and House leaders rolled out the package Tuesday. It includes nearly $75 billion for public works and Medicaid assistance for states, diverted from the $700 billion Wall Street bailout.

"The bill creates jobs it meets the needs of those who are unemployed and focuses on fostering prosperity," Pelosi said.

The bill also includes tax breaks designed to help small business, a six-month extension of unemployment benefits and assistance with "COBRA" healthcare payments, and additional food stamp aid.

2. This is about helping people find employment, not health care. nt

5. Not quite true; the cobra subsidy is about helping the unemployed keep their insurance
The bill that was signed in the Spring has/is expiring this month for everybody who received the subsidy (a 2/3 subsidy of premium). Thousands will be letting their cobra coverage go if this is not passed before year end.

6. The topic in the op was about a jobs bill by next year,
not about COBRA running out. That's a whole 'nother problem that needs to be addressed.

7. But the cobra extension is included in the bill that the House is voting on tomorrow
and I thought that was what the OP was talking about.

Either way, it *all* needs to be addressed, asap

8. Here will be the Jobs Bill that passes...
You'll need to be over the age of 60, unemployed for at least eight years, never had a prior job, a masters degree, and more more than four toes per foot.
