For all the frustrated DUers, please try to remember that Lieberman was Gore's running mate.
Together, they won the popular vote and two SCOTUS votes swept away the will of the majority of a nation.

I vomited in my mouth when Gore chose Lieberman as a running mate, and I raged when the SCOTUS screwed us all. I am still, however, able to flinch at the realization that we almost put Holy Joe one heartbeat away from the Oval Office.

Discuss.

5. His shortlist was Lieberman, Edwards and Kerry, right?
Interesting paths those three have traveled since 2000...

9. Not sure who else might have been on it but I thought Lieberman was
the least likely pick, and it turned out to be Lieberman.

Damn it all.

10. I will always wonder how many votes Lieberman cost Gore in that election.
I seriously saw him as a detriment to the ticket even then.

13. Oh, agreed. I was aghast when he picked that jerk. I have no doubt
it cost him votes.

6. That was 8 years ago. 8 years before 2000,
Al Gore was discussing what George W Bush was in 2003.

In the end, it's all politics. Plenty of spin to be found everywhere. What was different between 1992 and 2003...

It's all politics.

8. At the time, Joe was still considered something of a liberal...

Gore took him because he wanted to put Clintons zipper problems behind him. Al Gore ran as fast as he could from Bill Clinton and ran a lackluster campaign. He still managed to win the popular vote, and only lost because of more that 2 votes in the SCOTUS. Republican aids rioted and damaged public property to stop the recount.

11. Absolutely accurate! The sum total of the reason Gore picked Lieberman was
Lieberman's denunciation of Clinton's sexual behavior. It was a disappointing choice for me at the time. I felt Kerry or Edwards, either one, would have been a good choice. I have always loved Al Gore. Campaigned for his nomination in 1988, was upset he did not run in '92. In 2000 it felt like I had been waiting to see President Gore my whole life. I still consider him to be one of the most qualified people who ever ran for the office. Okay, that was a detour but it still haunts me how different our lives could be had SCOTUS not coronated Bush with their indefensible ruling.

15. It all had to do with distancing himself from Clinton.
He saw Lieberman as the squeeky clean anti-Clinton and put him on the ticket because Lieberman had been one of Clinton's strongest critics during the Monica L affair (even though he didn't vote for removal from office).

18. Probably the worst decision Al Gore ever made
which is why he never commented on it.
