Man Murdered in fight over time on Nautilus Machine at gym
An altercation over an exercise machine turned deadly in an East Flatbush gym Saturday.

Douglas Smith was jumped by two thugs wielding a knife and hammer after an argument over who claimed "first dibs" on a Nautilus machine. The 50-year-old social worker quarreled with another gym member, who in turn called the alleged killers.

The New York Daily News reports:

Witnesses said Smith was exercising on the elliptical machine when the duo ambushed him from behind, stabbing him three times in the back and walloping him in the head with a hammer.

One of the alleged killers, Shawn Hing, was arrested Sunday night and charged with second-degree murder. The other alleged killer and the gym member are still at large.

6. So what - they do the job
Geez I think DU is elitist at times. Like Y's can afford to get the latest and greatest craze in exercise. Some of us don't have the bucks or want to face the jam packed facilities at places like LA Fitness.

10. where did i say they didn't do the job
i don't use machines, because i am a competitive athlete, and they aren't very good at building sport specific strength for my task, but as far as machines go, and for general weight training/fitness, i think nautilus are quite well made and capable.

i've long been a fan of dr leistner, who writes fondly of the nautilus machine.

8. Nice of you to catch the
FOCUS OF THE STORY, champ.

If it hadn't been for that lame piece of exercise equipment, that man would still be alive. Right? Or did the part about the dead guy register at all?

My sympathies for the victim's family - and some small hope that Paulsby might learn to at least pretend to exhibit something akin to human compassion.

7. Nothing wrong with Nautilus, and this was an eliptical machine.
Nautilus makes quality eliptical equipment, and my gym has a number of excellent Nautilus weight machines still in service. Hammer Strength is nice, but I don't believe they build an eliptical machine. Might be wrong on that.

12. i have never said nautilus isn't good
in fact i think they are quite good, for their purpose.

i merely said i rarely see them any more.

hth

i really wish people would exercise reading comprehension skillz and not make unjustified, unsupported assumptions

that would kick ass

14. Interesting take.
You said: "what gym still has NAUTILUS machines?" And then referred to Hammer Strength. You were obviously thumbing your nose at Nautilus weight machines, likely not having read the article specifying that this was cardio equipment, especially considering that *one again* I don't believe Hammer Strength makes eliptical equipment.

As for not seeing them, I have 4 different gym memberships (3 of them are free, so why not?). The only one that doesn't have at least a few Nautilus stations is a gutter hardcore gym that has nothing but free weights (Big Lou, Arnold and Franco always worked out there when in the area...nice lifting in their shadows, you know?). I guess personal experiences must vary.

15. you obviously can't read
Edited on Wed Dec-16-09 12:58 AM by paulsby
i said NOTHING negative about nautilus machines being in any way a bad thing.

you are simply too much of a coward to admit you read your own prejudices etc into what i wrote, and admit your error

ALL i did was comment on that in my experience, nautilus machines are rarely seen these days

so, not only do you fail at reading comprehension but you fail to even have the honesty to admit a little mistake.

just as the coverup is often worse than the crime, the refusal to admit a simple error, simply makes you look MORE foolish

congrats.

18. so why the fuck would you care if they were nautilus or not
and bother to comment on that and only that, in a story about a murder

methinks thou dost protest too much

take your own advice
just as the coverup is often worse than the crime, the refusal to admit a simple error, simply makes you look MORE foolish
