Obama at the Bat A Parody by M. Denton Engle (that's me. :hi: )
The outlook was brilliant for the Democrats that day; The polls showed a win, but the Court supreme had its say, When Gore went down without a fight, and Kerry went with less, A shocked silence fell upon the supporters of progress.
A harried few got up to stand and shout in despair. The rest Clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast; They thought, “If only a strong Democrat could get a chance – We’d all donate our last dollar, to a Dem with a stance.”
With a Prez bent on revenge shredding freedom left and right, In the name of patriotism, and no end in sight, Upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy hovered; For there seemed but little chance a leader would be discovered.
But then the midterm elections, and to the joy of all, They voted in record numbers, much to the Right’s appall, And when the dust had settled, and Dems saw what had occurred, The power in the House, Senate, and State had been transferred.
From the throats of millions and millions there rose lusty yells; It rumbled through the country, it rattled in the dells; It pounded on the mountains and recoiled upon the plains, For finally, the voters had voted not with fear, but brains.
With a balance of power in the government restored; The progressive agenda could no longer be completely ignored. With some hope in their hearts and 2008 on their minds, Dems tried to minimize damage for the sake of mankind’s.
The country eagerly watched all the primaries throughout, And then cheered as Obama beat McCain without a doubt. The Limbaugh and O’Reilly faithful screamed with rage and fear, “He’s a fascist socialist! Your freedoms will disappear!”
Obama, without a blink of an eye, took all in stride; Ignoring the rightwing hate, he tried to bridge the divide. “Healthcare for every single American is a must!” He added with hope for change, “Before the break in August.”
In reaching out to the right, away went single payer; Next, public option was attacked by every naysayer. The facts were twisted while Obama stood steadfastly by; His calm speeches were met by the Right with shouts of “You lie!”
With a smile of calm confidence the president’s face shone; “No worries, we don’t need the Right. We can do it alone,” He said. “Reid, get all sixty on board before the new year.” But the Prez ignored deals with each insurance profiteer.
“Fraud!” cried the maddened millions, and echo answered “Fraud!” But one last speech from Obama and the pundits were awed. They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his patience strain, And they knew the Prez wouldn’t let reform pass by again. The calm has fled Obama’s face, his frustration more clear; Medicare is the last chance for reform to persevere. Fifty-nine senators in line, a single one to go, And Medicare expansion suggested by Senator Joe!
Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright, The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light, And somewhere men are laughing, and little children shout; But there is no joy for Dems – Insurance bought out Joe’s vote.
