Man's blood donations reach 80 gallons

CINCINNATI, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- A blood center in Cincinnati said a 79-year-old man has donated 80 gallons of blood during his lifetime, helping as many as 1,920 individuals in need of blood.

Dr. Ronald Sacher of Cincinnati's Hoxworth Blood Center said Paul Michels of Villa Hills, Ky., reached the impressive donation milestone 58 years after beginning blood donations in 1951, WXIX-TV, Cincinnati, reported Wednesday.

"Mr. Michels is a Hoxworth hero and a hero to many tri-state patients," Sacher said. "We encourage the community to applaud Mr. Michels efforts and join him in becoming a Hoxworth hero by making a blood donation."

Michels told WXIX his lifetime of blood donations was based on an urge to help others.

3. That's cool.
I started donating blood regularly this year. It's an easy way to feel you've made some sort of difference.

4. A good friend of mine will get there one day.
He donates and then as soon as he's able to, donates again. I would do it myself if they didn't have the ban on gay men giving blood. Thank goodness there are people out there who can and will give. They save a lot of lives.

In Britain, they only allow you to give 3 (US) pints a year.

7. Maybe they used to allow 1 pint a month
It's every 16 weeks in the UK now; perhaps the US use to allow it every month, when this guy started?
