SJ Mercury News: "Gas gone wild"
http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_5720702?nclick_check=1

Want a tank of cheap gas? Fly to Honolulu.

Whatever you do, stay out of the South Bay, where a single-day record could be set this weekend. Friday, gas was going for $3.36.3 a gallon in San Jose - six-tenths shy of its all-time mark, set in May 2006. And Friday's mark was a whopping 33 cents higher than the $3.03 that motorists were paying on Oahu.

Usually, it's the other way around. Heck, Hawaii's record is $3.68 a gallon.

A phone call to the auto club in Honolulu on Friday led to a woman named Diane, who laughed loudly when asked about their relative relief vs. California's real pain.

"Yes, we're a lot lower," she said. "Don't know why. What can you do? Aloha."

2. Hawaii has price controls on gas
I forget the details/formula for how they determine max prices. They did this to prevent customer getting gouged by virtue of location.

They got screwed by it during Katrina, because the formula based prices in part on average prices in the worst hit areas.

Sounds like they catching the good side of it this time.

5. Yikes! Only paying 2.71 in Indiana
that *only* sorta sticks in my throat - in the sense that a few years ago such prices were not only unheard of, but unthought of - outside of conversations of how much more European countries paid for gas and wether or not such prices might have an effect on consumption here - you know "theoretical" discussions - not really about actual prices.

Over $4.00 - Wow.

Mendicino is gorgeous! Lots to love about it - but ya'll are getting soaked on gas prices.

4. It's the cost of transporting gasoline from Chevron's refinery near
Richmond all the the 30 or so miles down to San Jose.......uhhm, Never mind.

I wonder what the discrepancy is minus state gas taxes?
