Is it just me? Or are we really living 'The Outer Limits'? |
|
"There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper.
We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity.
For the REST OF YOUR LIFE sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to... THE OUTER LIMITS."
Does anyone else feel like this is what's happening to us?

Everything since 99 has seemed straight out of a bad dream.

2. Are you sure it didn't start happening in 1980? |
|
Pretty horrifying either way. :-(

8. I'd say 1980 was when it came right out in the open. |
|
And when I began wondering what was wrong with Americans. My jaw dropped, and it hasn't been picked up yet. Sorry, I just haven't been anything but overwhelmed. I was giddy in 1992. And it was a big improvement, but then I can't say I was thrilled. Are Americans really that dead to the world? I can't convince myself that that many people can all be inattentive. But then I do remember that headline after Bush stole office. Or was it re-stole office? I think it was his second term.

Been that way for three decades but it got much worse staring in '01 and it's getting even worse now.
The guys and gals that were supposed to return the nation to sanity have joined the other side.
And they've taken half of DU with them.

6. They used to at least TRY to cover up their lies; now they don't even bother |
|
Now they either lie blatantly (WMDs) or do something audacious (no-bid contracts) and just expect that we accept it all without question. There used to at least be a sense of shame; now there is no shame whatsoever.

9. The scary part: They used to think they had to pretend. Now they don't. |
|
I don't know that politicians ever had a sense of shame.
I think that once upon a time they feared the blowback should the public discover what they were up to.
I think they no longer worry about that because they have new 'terrorism' laws, crowd-control weapons, no real opposition parties, etc.
I think they've stopped pretending because we are no longer a democracy.

10. They know that as long as American Idol stays on TV, we're all fat and happy |
|
And when the "bread and circuses" are no longer enough for us, they have, as you say, the PATRIOT act, etc., to fall back on. You're absolutely right, and it's terribly depressing.
I just cannot believe how far this country has fallen in only my relatively short lifetime.

7. Except I would call this; The Inner Limits, if it were the Outer Limits; |
|
Edited on Wed Dec-16-09 05:55 PM by Uncle Joe
our national political imagination would be expansive, universal, enlightened, extroverted and not afraid to learn from the best lessons of other nations.
Whereas the Inner Limit political leadership is self-contained, rigid, fearful, arrogant and incestuous, with ever increasing pressure on the domestic, thus the question becomes how much can the Inner Limits take before it implodes.
Thanks for the thread, devilgrrl.
