AP Source: Chrysler will invest in Michigan plant (155 jobs to be created in Michigan)
http://www.mlive.com/business/west-michigan/index.ssf/2009/12/analysts_auto_industry_outlook.html

A person briefed on Chrysler Group LLC's plans says the automaker will announce plans on Thursday to invest millions in a Michigan factory to build fuel-efficient four-cylinder engines from Fiat.

Chrysler and Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm have scheduled a news conference to announce the investment in the Dundee plant south of Detroit. The person did not want to be identified because the official announcement had not been made.

Chrysler will create 155 jobs building a 1.4-liter engine that will power the Fiat 500 subcompact and other Chrysler vehicles.

Michigan approved a $4.6 million, 10-year tax credit for the $179 million investment last month.

1. Any guesses on how many applicants this will draw?
I'll take a stab at it and say 5,000 applicants.

3. Perhaps
but don't you need a union (UAW?) card to even be eligible? And I would think that maybe laid off workers might have first dibs. Maybe somebody who knows more about the auto industry can share.

the 19,550 lost 2006-2007, the 76,500 lost 2007-2008, the 43,000 lost 1/08 to 1/09, & the losses since the beginning of this year.

we're making progress--but still losing jobs.

9. yes, *i'm* the one who cut those 100's of thousands of jobs. furthermore,
*i'm* the one shoveling money to insurance corps & banksters & *forcing* bankruptcy in detroit & *demanding* job cuts, pension cuts, healthcare cuts. i'm the one who refuses to bail out cities, who's busting teachers' unions & public unions, it's *me*!

i'm not the one who wants america to fail, sorry.

11. No, you just cheer it on when it all happens
because that is part of the Marxist playbook: wanting economic conditions to deteriorate so that your "inevitable" Marxist paradise can rise from the ashes.

13. cheer *what* on? you're mistaken. i'm *refusing* to cheer for 155 crappy $14/hr
jobs funded, in part, by $4.6 MILLION in state tax breaks, when the recent detroit *gov't-forced* bankruptcies *alone* destroyed thousands of jobs, reduced wages, & clawed back pension benefits.

i got news for you: you can only keep telling people shit is gold so long.

5. More positive news. It won't all come at once but at least it seems the economy is headed in the
right direction.

Michigan unemployment down below 15% to 14.7 for November. The mood feels a bit better here on the ground, will have to see what winter brings.

talk to people there, you're in the minority.

the .3 "drop" is bullshit. job losses continue.

23. Jackson, Michigan and have we now started trusting the 'gov't numbers' now?
Anytime I post anything with gov't stats the boilerplate response is "those books are cooked".

So people start to look as the fool when pick and choose stats to serve their 'agenda'.

Personally I think it scares the hell out of some people that things may actually getting better. Their excuse for sitting home on their asses and complaining there are no jobs may soon wear thin, indeed!

24. is there some reason you think the gov't would cook the numbers to be *worse* than reality?
the common complaint i hear is they cook them to be *better*.

Have a Merry Christmas...indeed!

12. $29,677 in tax breaks for each of the promised 155 new workers. lets see, at the new
hire rate (reduced to $14/hour), the tax breaks pretty much cover the cost of wages for a year.

but keep shaking the pom-poms.

"Michigan has lost about 240,000 non-farm payroll jobs this year. The number of payroll jobs has dropped in nine of the first 11 months of 2009...Michigan has had the nation's highest jobless rate for much of the past four years."

155 jobs down, only 239,845 to go!!!

22. Right wingers like to spout off about the high cost of union labor. I
worked at a GM plant pouring iron back in 1973. We had over 150 iron pourers working on three shifts. Then GM came in and automated it and did away with all our jobs. So just in this part of the operation they did away with 150 highly paid union jobs. They also did away with a lot other jobs in this plant with robots. They did it at all their plants, and labor costs dropped considerably. Did they drop the price of the automobile, HELL NO!
