So say they KNOW we can't afford this mandated insurance fee- what does it mean?
Edited on Thu Dec-17-09 02:05 AM by BeHereNow
Pain in the ass that I am, I can't help looking to the future in regards
to the latest political machinations.

What does it tell us about our future as citizens?

As in, can it possibly be that they are so far removed from
we, the people, that they actually think we can afford to pony up their mandated
cost of insurance, or is there something more sinister at hand?

What exactly is the plan for people who can't afford their taxes as it is,
Much less an additional fine for failure to buy health insurance?
Debtor prison or mandatory military service as debtor forgiveness?

WTF is the bottom line?

Just thinking out loud...

as to not be noticed as a questioning citizen.
Thanks for the reminder.

6. Fear mongering nonsense
A tiny tiny tiny fraction of people who owe money to the IRS wind up in prison. They are people who have money and blatantly refuse to pay taxes because they think the federal income tax isn't constitutional and that the 16th amendment was never really ratified or some other such nonsense. The only people that might really and truly wind up in prison over this are a few idiot tea-baggers who have money but blatantly refuse to follow the law.

14. So why the penalties in the legislation?
If it is just "fear mongering" nonsense?
Nothing happens in politics by accident, more so by design.

18. The point of the mandate is to make people buy insurance
It's not to send people to prison. There's no change in the law, it's just imposing a new tax. If you don't pay the tax you face the same penalties as for not paying any other tax. One of which theoretically could include prison, but it's extremely unlikely.

What the fuck is going to happen to us when we have to choose
her medications and "insurance" that doesn't cover her condition?

26. As stated below, it doesn't apply if premiums exceed 8% of your income post subsidy
Edited on Thu Dec-17-09 03:10 AM by Hippo_Tron
If you pass that threshold and don't pay the IRS might possibly try to garnish your wages. Prison is extremely unlikely.

help us now?

I doubt it.

13. So it's 8% of our income or punishment. That's the cap? Is that a permanent cap? No loopholes?
Let's see:

So that's a new $320 a month bill for a single person earning $4K a month, but taking home $2.8K after taxes. And that's just for insurance--that doesn't even pay your deductables and what your insurers don't cover.

And that's best case scenario.

(Meanwhile, right now, I pay nothing and can't afford the co-pays and deductables...)

32. You misunderstand...
It doesn't mean everyone has to pay at least 8% of their income. It means that, if (even after government subsidies appropriate to your income bracket) the amount you would have to pay in premiums for the cheapest qualifying plan came to more than 8% of your income, you would be exempt from the mandate and could go without insurance without having to pay a penalty. (If you fell under that category, you'd also have the option to purchase low-cost "young and invincible" insurance that would really only cover catastrophic illness, no matter what your age. Note that you'd have the option to do so, but wouldn't have to.)

27. Get while the gettin's good
I had a sudden realization that things weren't working here 10 years ago. Realizing I was among the most sought after professions in the world, I began researching emigration to Australia. Too late. I was less than a year from the cut off age for occupations of preference and not enough time to get it done. Too late for me but I'd advise anyone young enough to do it. If you are not in one of the preferred occupations, do anything you need to do to get the training and get the hell out of here. It's gonna get real ugly, here.
