Does anyone know what the penalties will be for not buying health insurance?
Edited on Thu Dec-17-09 10:11 AM by IsItJustMe
I mean, we already have the highest prison population in the world, and the last time I heard it costs about 50,000 dollars a year to house a prisoner.

And I guess that our government could ruin their credit, take their income tax returns from them, and garnish their wages. This is the tactic that the government uses when people don't pay back their student loans.

If this bill is passed, I have a feeling that the people in our society who are the most vulnerable and can least afford it will be the ones who will be hurt the most by it.

It probably is just me, but it seems that the intentions of this bill are noble (Everyone have insurnace) but the end result will be harsh and wrong (The criminalization of people, for whatever reason, who can not afford to buy into this system).

3. You are correct...
...those who are most vulnerable and least able to afford it, will be the ones who suffer.

The Democrats in the Senate are fools, just downright fools if they go for this POS.

Of course the Senate has become our House of Lords, a bunch of out-of-touch patricians who look down their pointy noses at the rest of us. The thought of doing something populist like single-payer is absolute anathema to this lot (with a few, very few exceptions).

Well the Democrats in the House aren't much better, but they are closer to their constituents so they aren't quite so high and mighty as the Senators are.

It is no wonder that the Teabaggers are viewed more favorably than either Democrats or Republicans, as scary as that is. There is a populist rage growing, and neither the Democrats nor the left is engaging it or harnessing it. That fury has got to go somewhere. It is only awaiting a really good demagogue before we will witness a movement.

Here's hoping we can weather the storm.

10. $500 fine. Every 10 days without insurance.

After 45 days it jumps to $1000. After 60 days without insurance, it's 90 days in jail.

If it goes on for more than a year, they can take your house. And your kids.

Seriously. I read it in another post. "Dem loving Corporatist's will imprison the poor".

23. So It's a Penalty of $62.59 a Month in 2013
moving to $29.16 a month by 2015?

That actually seems reasonable for the ability to use emergency rooms without insurance.

Now, here is what the wording says about enforcement:

17 ‘‘(g) ADMINISTRATION AND PROCEDURE.—
18 ‘‘(1) IN GENERAL.—The penalty provided by
19 this section shall be paid upon notice and demand by
20 the Secretary, and except as provided in paragraph
21 (2), shall be assessed and collected in the same man
22
ner as an assessable penalty under subchapter B of
23 chapter 68.
24 ‘‘(2) SPECIAL RULES.—Notwithstanding any
25 other provision of law—
340
1 ‘‘(A) WAIVER OF CRIMINAL PENALTIES.—
2 In the case of any failure by a taxpayer to time
3 ly pay any penalty imposed by this section, such
4 taxpayer shall not be subject to any criminal
5 prosecution or penalty
with respect to such fail
6 ure.
7 ‘‘(B) LIMITATIONS ON LIENS AND LEV
8 IES.—The Secretary shall not—
9 ‘‘(i) file notice of lien with respect to
10 any property
of a taxpayer by reason of
11 any failure to pay the penalty imposed by
12 this section, or
13 ‘‘(ii) levy on any such property with
14 respect to such failure.’’.

24. Not exactly. There are no fines/taxes until the year 2013 when the exchanges begin.
The fine goes up from $95 a year in 2013 to a max of $750 a year in 2015. That's per person.

15. Not sure about the Senate bill, but in the House...
people who don't get insurance would have a 2.5 percent increase in income tax. That's the penalty, there is no other.

Now, if you then refuse to pay your income taxes, you're a tax evader, and you're subject to the penalties involved for that crime.

25. Jail, no. The IRS just goes after 2.5% of your income.
Although Pelosi once did say that people should be jailed, it isn't in any of the bills.
