These glaciers are growing
Source: Omaha World Herald

By Matthew Hansen

Two UNO professors have discovered that some glaciers in Pakistan are growing in size — a discovery that could toss them into the center of a climate-change controversy.

Jack Shroder and Michael Bishop will present their government-funded report Friday at a national conference in San Francisco, likely shocking other geologists because most of the world's glaciers are melting.

But Shroder, a longtime geology professor, wants to be clear: He thinks the glaciers that the research team studied are probably growing because of global warming, not despite it.

The discovery doesn't disprove climate change, said Shroder, who has studied the western Himalayas for decades. Rather, it could help scientists better understand the effects of global warming.

4. When wasn't that the case?
Expectations of a static climate are an error. There's no need to panic over the weather.

9. Permit this current climate change to continue and accelerate,
as you propose, would be so massively disruptive of, especially the least wealthy, human lives all over the world that the only humane course of humanitarian adaptive, remedial or palliative action that could then be reasonably taken in very many cases would be mass euthanasia.

And that's without speaking of economic consequences.

Or, would you prefer to let such a large majority hopelessly suffer as long as you're all right, Jack?

2. A phenomenon noted in Antarctica - warming = increased precip = ice mass increase
It may also be in play at Perito Moreno (Ch-Ar), which is one of the big few southern hemisphere glaciers currently advancing.

3. Doubtless this will fuel the deniers
One locality bucking the clear trend across the rest of the globe will be trumpeted as "proof" that the global climate isn't changing. Or that if it is, our wasteful practices aren't contributing to it. And if they are, then there's nothing we can do about it. "Hey, I just found 32 cents in the couch cushions! That means I'm not broke after all. Re-commence spending like a drunken sailor!"

And for the inevitable post, no, I don't think that Shroder and Bishop should have concealed or fudged their findings. The pursuit of science depends on the most comprehensive accumulation of facts possible.

13. My idea of fun is turning GW denialists over to a large group of youth with stones.
LOTS of stones.

Funny, I don't think young people with a lot of years ahead of them would appreciate such a cavalier, self-centered attitude as yours.

15. I think WriteDown is just being ironic.
Defeatist, maybe, but irony at its best is always at least thought-provoking.

Unlike the case of that other apparently genuinely gleeful narcissistic denier above.

I know a lot of the denser posters around here need to have their hands held to see :sarcasm: because their brains can't process words properly. Hence, the Smilies lookup table.

Other cascade glaciers are receding however at an impressive rate.
