HCR: Maybe Progressives can create an even bigger hostage situation |
|
First of all, this is a sincere post... I mean it...
I was originally thinking that maybe we should just let any bill pass, because at least it might save a few lives, and we can build on the legislation later, blah blah blah.
But then I realized, if the GOP and Joe Lieberman want to create a hostage situation like this... why don't we Progressives create an even bigger hostage situation?
We can do that by saying, "Either give us a strong public option, or we're going to just let the entire private health industry fall apart by its own weight, and it will. We have decided to forget the 2010 electoral politics, and go for broke, and we really mean GO FOR BROKE."
What a lot of people don't realize is that over the next few years, their employer is going to drop health insurance as a benefit. So be it. Let it all fall apart.

2. I think the difference is that the Blue Dogs know the WH has their backs. |
|
The Progressives would have to fight the people who control the party's infrastructure to create this hostage situation. That's why you're seeing it play out the way you are, with Blue Dogs shooting off at the hip, and Progressives having to mince words.

3. Any democratic senator that doesn't try to bleed the WH for something is stupid |
|
It worked for Lieberman, it worked for Mary Landrieu. They had their little snits about the bill and got big payoffs.
I'd be threatening defection from the roof top if I were a Dem in the senate right now. It seems to get results.
