Traficant Mulls Comeback

"Beamed out of Congress and imprisoned seven years ago following his conviction on federal corruption charges, ex-Rep. Jim Traficant (D-OH) is weighing a political comeback," reports CQ Politics.

"Traficant, who was widely known during his House tenure (1985-2002) for his bombastic populism and for his signature 'Beam me up!' expression of indignation against the government, said at a press conference Thursday that he would distribute nominating petitions in three congressional districts to gauge support for a 2010 House bid."

Said Traficant: "I will assess my strengths and make a determination probably by the end of January."

1. I miss that hair -- and those speeches!
Is there any federal law barring his return to Congress? States have laws about felons holding office, but I don't know about the federal government. Hell, most of them should be locked up, anyway. I have a good friend in Ohio, and he's told me that Youngstown is pretty corrupt. It doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility that he could be elected there.

3. I've seen stranger things happen.
Can't recall exactly when, but I'm sure I have.

5. His views are pretty much in line with the "tea-baggers" We don't need
another wacko like that on the hill.
