FEC Opens Scrutiny of Nonprofit Rules
Me: First redefine what non-profits are, and consider churches who pontificate on politics.

FEC Opens Scrutiny of Nonprofit Rules

The Federal Election Commission announced that it is taking suggestions on how it should rewrite its regulations that limit how nonprofits can raise and spend money.

The decision follows a court case ruling where Democratic abortion rights group EMILY’s List should be treated “like individual citizens,” and be “entitled to spend and raise unlimited money.”

The FEC decided not to appeal the court’s decision through a 3-3 split vote along party lines in October. The Justice Department now has decided not to challenge it, either.

In the meantime, the FEC released an interim rule as the commission receives comments from the public and deliberates on what will be in the final rules.

During commission’s final meeting of the year on Thursday, it also elected Republican Matthew S. Petersen as its new chairman for the 2010 year.

Leadership alternates between parties, with a Democratic commissioner in charge during odd-numbered years and Republicans running things during even-numbered years. Democratic Commissioner Cynthia L. Bauerly was elected as the vice chairperson.

1. It will all be moot when they legalize unlimited corporate campaign donations
by calling them "protected political speech", as they are expected to do shortly. They are just beating up liberal non-profits to dampen the reaction to their upcoming ruling, which includes efforts to create publicly financed campaigns.

What makes it ludicrous is that the amount anti- mega-corporate non-profits could spend is a like a grain of sand compared to the Sahara of what the big, for-profit corporations will pour into the process.

Support FENA. Tell anyone you think will understand its importance, and Congress regularly. All the other issues you care about will be impacted one way or the other depending on how campaigns are financed.
