(12-17) 12:57 PST ALAMEDA -- An Alameda police dog trying to flush out a burglary suspect was shot and killed by an officer today after the dog attacked her, a police spokesman said.

Billy, a Belgian Malinois, and his handler were among those responding to a burglary at the Coast Guard Recruiting Center at 660 Central Ave. shortly before 6:15 a.m., police Lt. Bill Scott said.

Billy bit a uniformed officer assisting on the call. The dog did not let go when his handler ordered him to do so, and the officer being bitten shot him to death, Scott said.

The officer, whose name was not released, has been with the department two years. She was being treated for bite wounds at Highland Hospital in Oakland.

5. reading the whole article--I think something is very wrong with Alameda's k-9
unit--another handler left a dog (same breed) in the car while he went for training--the dog died. seems like an investigation is in order.

6. But the most important question is, of course, how's the poor gun doing?
Inquiring minds want to know.

And I'm sure they'll soon be showing up here to remind us where our real focus & concern should be....
