Deal on abortion coverage not enough, Nebraska senator says
The most-closely-watched man in the Senate, Democrat Ben Nelson of Nebraska, on Thursday rejected a proposed compromise related to abortion coverage, but Democratic leaders said that they remain confident that the matter would be resolved and that the chamber could still push an overhaul of the health-care system to final passage by Christmas.

Nelson, the lone holdout on the health bill among Senate Democrats, has been the focus of an intense lobbying campaign by White House officials and Senate leaders trying to assemble the 60 votes needed to avert a Republican filibuster and approve President Obama's top domestic initiative. Nelson has said he could not support the package unless it explicitly bars the use of federal funds for abortion services.

Nelson has been pressing for inclusion of a provision contained in the health bill the House approved last month that would prohibit recipients of federal subsidies from using the money to buy insurance policies that include abortion coverage. Abortion rights advocates are strongly opposed to that provision, however, saying it would give insurers a strong incentive to abandon abortion coverage.

2. Don't bet on it forcing reconciliation
With this senate, they're more likely to give him what he wants - the Stupak language.

10. But you don't understand....
the entire nation does not understand because THERE IS NO JOURNALISM! The reason the Ben is so opposed to abortion is that he was born to an unwed teen mother and dumped in an orphanage and we then adopted. The reason he opposes abortion is because he feels that if abortion had been an option for his biological mother that he would not have been born. This was a big issue when he was governor or NE.

12. That IS interesting...
but I don't want Roe v Wade overturned and I don't want any steps taken in that direction.

And if he HAD been aborted back then, I wouldn't need to call for it now.

11. Because he is the only Dem
that can get elected from this VERY conservative state and the Dem party would rather have a wolf in sheep's clothing than an wolf in wolfs clothing in Washington.

7. Give him what he wants and there will be a newer, crazier demand.
Next thing you know his vote will be contingent on stitching unmarried women's vaginas shut or something.

9. Hey, Harry, are you listening?
Ahem. YOU CAN NEVER REALLY PLEASE A BLUE DOG OR A REPUBLICAN

You can bend over so far backwards you can grab your ankles, giving them everything and giving the people of this country nothing, and they will still want more. With a cherry on top.

Forget it, Harry. This thing has to go to reconciliation.
