from the Guardian UK:

Losing my faith
For me the hardest thing was facing the possibility that this life is all there is, says Simon Le Bon

Listen to Simon read his contribution to The Atheist's Guide to Christmas, edited by Ariane Sherine. The book is out now in print, audio and on iTunes.

1. Fascinating. He had a near-death experience, yet didn't turn to religion
Back when he was a name, his boat got lost at sea off, I believe, Central America. He was out there alone for a couple of days before being rescued. :scared:

Yet somehow he avoided becoming a stark raving fundie.

4. Did he actually suffer a physical death?...Or was he just afraid he would die?
Most people who have near-death experiences come back with far broader spiritual views than that of fundies.

2. I dunno, it makes me value this life more.
Since it's the only one I'm going to be given, I'm a lot less tolerant of putting up with bullshit based on a promise of a "reward" in the afterlife.

3. The comments are entertaining
"Atheism is basically ignorance and nowadays, an acceptence of the establishment status quo."

I must be brave and buck this trend away from the big man on a throne in the sky...

5. If your concept of God is limited to a "big man on a throne in the sky"
You haven't rejected God...You've just rejected the third grade version of him.

6. That concept was very real a few hundred years ago
so I guess everyone was a third grader back then.

Either that, or reason is replacing our need to placate our fear of death with fairy tales.

8. Yeah.......So was illness caused by "ill humors"
Science proved that wrong..but neither "reason" nor science can prove or disprove the existence of God.

10. Say what? Reason has disproven Gods throughout history
Gods of rain, of fire, of war, of wheat - they fell from the sky when science came up with a better answer.

The God of Everlasting Life will never fall, because most people are far too afraid of death. They will call red blue, war peace, sun rain, up down to hold onto that one.

I'm not buying in.

11. "Reason" says there is no such thing as extrasensory perception either
but I've experienced it.

In any case, I don't really care who "buys in" or not..I'm more interested in the actions of people rather than their beliefs.

9. There are many "college versions" of god.
Perhaps you should acquaint yourself with something besides Right Wing Christian Fundamentalism.
