Online abortion info under fire
Online posting of women's abortion information challenged in Oklahoma
By Wayne Drash, CNN
December 18, 2009 3:58 a.m. EST

(CNN) -- A judge could determine Friday whether to allow an Oklahoma law to go forward that will post information online about women who get abortions in the state -- an act critics say would be harassment and an invasion of privacy.

"We don't feel that the government should be able to run a grand inquisition into women's private lives," says Jennifer Mondino, an attorney challenging the law on behalf of the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights.

State Sen. Todd Lamb helped draft the abortion legislation and describes it as "a common sense measure with bipartisan support." He says the left has tried to skew the law's intent through a campaign of misinformation.

"We're not trying to embarrass anybody, hurt anybody or make anybody's identities known. That's not the purpose of the legislation," the Republican lawmaker says.

"We want to collect hard data that can be a useful tool in helping prevent future unwanted pregnancies."

The law requires doctors to fill out a 10-page questionnaire for every abortion performed, including asking the woman about her age, marital status, race and years of education.

......

"It requires doctors to ask and submit answers to at least 37 intensely personal questions. There are details in those questions about rape, incest, abuse, relationship problems and emotional health," Stapleton says. "I think women can be identified."

I hope this gets trashed fast.

1. If this law is passed, what would prevent women from making up
answers to the questions? How can there be any assurance that the data would be valid? If I were ever asked those kinds of questions, you can be sure I'd never tell the truth on any of them. I'd make everything up, in as preposterous a way as possible.

2. Likely just as accurate as the cenus
When it also goes into excessive details.

So much of the data we have about abortion appears to be anecdotal. It will be interesting (if this comes to pass) to have real numbers. But ten pages does seem like a lot.

3. My point is that I don't believe the numbers will be real.

If I were asked about any previous abortions, I would reply that I've had five. Or maybe I'd say I had ten. (In reality, I've had zero). So, where's the validity of the stats?

Conversely, if a woman has had previous abortions but doesn't want to reveal that, she can simply say that she hasn't had any. The data on this is not going to be reliable.

4. Couple of things here...
Most of these questions would be illegal now on employment applications. Older women will remember all the questions they used to be asked.

If all this is required by law in Oklahoma, then certainly they need one more question:

Who is/was the father?

Start naming the responsible males and provide the exact same info and this will come to a quick end.

Almost without exception, everything the pro-birthers throw at women today ignores the male participation in the event. Start exposing the males ladies...that might be the best weapon you have.

9. not ONE of those thirty-seven questions refers to the man at all--
and NONE of that info is any of the voyeurs' (excuse me, reichwing sicko, woman-hating lawmakers) frigging business.

6. They want a useful tool in helping prevent future unwanted pregnancies?
How about starting with easy access to many different types of contraception.

8. Bullshit - this method of collecting data is flawed, and the CDC already collects stats.
And we don't ask for that kind of data for erectile dsyfunction, vasectomies, or tube tying.

Or childbirth.

11. What happened to the HEPA laws?

And just who does he think taught us this trick? He says the left has tried to skew the law's intent through a campaign of misinformation.
