Texas 4 Year Old Sent Home For Having Long Hair
Ruby-Sachs: Texas 4 Year Old Sent Home For Having Long Hair

<snip>
In a small town in Texas (oh Texas, do you have to play into every stereotype?) a small boy has been suspended from classes because he insists on wearing his hair past his ear lobes. He even told the school administrators that he was growing his hair long so he could donate it to a Locks of Love-type program.

The school responded that, fads in hairstyles “designed to attract attention to the individual or to disrupt the orderly conduct of the classroom or campus is not permitted,”

This child may not be interested in femming up his image, but the rule that caught him certainly is aimed at maintaining a masculine appearance for male students. It takes a general dress code that limits expression across the board and singles out individuals that separate from their gender norm.

Perhaps this kind of behavior garners attention, but some kind of individual expression is so personal, it is simply not acceptable to regulate it. Long hair and feminine clothes for men and the opposite for women fall into this category.

I feel for the family of this boy, whose only option other than attending this school (it seems from reading the story) is to submit to home schooling. But thank goodness this boys parents are supporting his choice to be different and, through that support, encouraging the end of a policy that seeks to stifle a pretty fundamental part of the school districts’ students’ identity.

10. Twas ever thus
"If they have the capacity to think freely and understand these types of things, they're going to be kept out by a very complicated filtering system -- which actually starts in kindergarten, I think. In fact, the whole educational and professional training system is a very elaborate filter, which just weeds out people who are too independent, and who don't know how to be submissive, and so on -- because they're dysfunctional to the institutions." ~ Noam Chomsky
