In 1916 a number of poets started a revolution in Ireland against English rule. After years of fighting and international intention the Irish rebels has the British Empire on the ropes. Michael Collins led a delegation to London to negotiate a settlement. England was offering to allow what is now known as the Irish Republic to operate as the Irish Free State. The catch was that Britain would retain 6 counties in the North. Many in the revolutionary movement shouted to "not sign the treaty," as it would solidify British rule in Northern Ireland forever. They argued that the time was ripe to keep fighting and gain total independence. On the other side, the "Free Staters" argued that signing the treaty was only the first step to achieving their ultimate goal of a free and united Ireland. We all know how the story played our and continues to play out.

3. Nor should it be a campaign slogan, but it is all that will be left for Democrats to run on. |
|
If the Democratic party keeps riding the razors edge between "lesser of two evils" and "just as evil".
