Los Angeles Times to cut about 150 jobs
LOS ANGELES - About 150 jobs at the Los Angeles Times are expected to be cut next week amid a recent earnings report from parent Tribune Co. that show slumping revenue, the newspaper reported.

The cuts, expected to be announced Monday, would constitute more than 5 percent of the work force and include 70 newsroom positions, unnamed Los Angeles Times executives said Friday in a story posted on the newspaper's Web site.

Newspaper executives believe many of the cuts will come through voluntary buyouts.

After the reductions, the newspaper will have about 2,625 employees. Its news staff will drop from 940 to 870, the newspaper said.

1. yeah, that's the ticket. Cut staff, cut more news, add more fluff
that will really bring back the readers. there's a plan if I ever saw one.

Hey, here's another thought. if you cut staff by half, you can DOUBLE your readership and you profits. And just think, if you fire everyone, your client base will be infinite!

2. The LA Times is already a shell of its former self.
The Tribune Company has ruined it with previous staff cutbacks and poor editorial decision-making.

I gave up on it because of an increasingly rw slant.

Looks like LA is going to be left without a newspaper unless some local group of civic-minded investors wrestles it away from its corporate overlords and returns it to its former glory. Damn shame.
