Avatar is great. (no spoilers) |
|
This is the first 3D film I've ever seen where I thought, "I can't imagine seeing that in 2D."
Only, I'm sure it's great in 2D and IMAX as well.
I was a big James Cameron fan before Titanic, which I've never seen and now may have to.
Avatar is indeed a generational film. It will change you.
And the fox news/teabagger crowd hate it for good reason.

it's the first movie in a long time that i'll be paying to see multiple times at the theatre.
the story definitely has it's weak points- but the overall experience is really like nothing else.

They spent $400 million on FX and advertising but forgot to spend any on a plot or dialogue. My lounge post about the plot: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x9176944

the wife tomorrow. My goth nephew, who went with me, said it was "pretty good" but it didn't follow the original story line from Nickelodeon. Huh?!

You're right, onehandle. It's a freakin' knockout of a visual left-wing screed. HOORAY for James Cameron!!

19. Yeah, Cause The Only Advertising That Needs To Be Done For A $500m Movie Is A Listing... |
|
in the local rag. Shite, while we're at it why don't we do away with all advertising and promotional activities. We can start by eliminating all the ads on DU. How about that Feed America banner I'm looking at right now? How well do you think that would go for DU? And ya know, sometimes the media organisms over a thing because it's actually, well, good.

15. I guess I'll go against the grain ... |
|
It was okay.
There's no arguing that it wasn't a visually stunning film. Once again, a filmmaker has dazzled us with creative use of special effects, and Cameron did it a lot better than most. I won't even suggest that this part of it wasn't brilliant.
But the premise that drove the protagonist to be where he was and in those circumstances was dumb. The plot devices were contrived and unoriginal, and the love story was just boring, to me anyway.
It actually lost me during the first "monster encounter" scene, for a number of reasons, but I won't go into them in detail because to do so would require spoilers. There were some better moments later on. I think it needed better editing and a few scenes cut that seemed to be there to prove what cool things the effects guys could do but, imo, actually made me question the plot.
I bottom line it with this: About 20 minutes into it, I decided I was watching a semi-live action version of Furn Gully, without the humor and with a somewhat more complex back story.
All that said, it was a fun film, and I do actually recommend people go see it and do so in a theater. I do not think it will translate well to the television screen. It may be fine in 2D, but it still needs the larger scope of a theater screen for a person to appreciate all the visual drama. Just don't expect "the best movie ever" with this. It was hyped the way Titanic was hyped. Both are entertaining, and this one will probably win all kinds of awards, but it's not going to be in my must-own-so-I-can-watch-it-over-and-over-again list.
You may commence the throwing of rotten fruit in my direction now. :)

17. When I first heard about this film, FernGully was the first thing I thought of. |
|
But Avatar wasn't hokey and did not have the childish songs. It certainly avoided the whole cartoon feel of it. Well, FernGully was a cartoon. Avatar was not meant to be funny.
As for the plot points, Avatar should be thought of as a fairy tale for adults. So it's not the most complex film, but most everything that happens is in place for good reason.
All very satisfying.
And I do not think the love story was boring.

21. Yes - I just got back from Avatar and it was a wonderful movie experience! |
|
Saw it in a 3D IMAX theater and was completely enthralled throughout the whole thing.
Sure.....there were some stupid things about it, which I won't mention so that I can keep this completely spoil free. But Overall I would give it an A- and think everyone should definitely see this if you like movies. This is NOT going to look the same on your sh*tty tv at home, even if you have a 50 Inch LED, state of the art super tv.
