Aftermath of the Beast of 2009 - thousands of Virginians w/o power

VDOT cameras show one lane open on 29S, and one on I-64 near C-ville. My neighbor heard a transformer blow out yesterday morning, and there is no way for power trucks to get to the site because even the major interstates aren't clear yet. We still have power but phone service went out an hour ago. Living in the country is usually great, but at times like this it can feel a bit isolated.

5. i havent been home for three days now, hoping to at least get within hiking distance of home tonight

but wouldnt move back to the city for all the tea in china, even with the snow days.. luckily the work got a mass hotel booking from friday until tonight so at least i wasnt tempted to hit 66...

Some residents in the Carolinas are digging out from a weekend storm that blanketed many areas with snow, ice and freezing rain, and thousands woke up today to a chilly morning with no electricity. Tens of thousands of power outages were reported in North and South Carolina. Duke Energy and Progress Energy reported more than 90,000 total outages late this morning. In South Carolina, torrential rainstorms caused flooding in some areas. Authorities shut off access to Charleston's downtown peninsula Friday after almost 4 inches of rain fell. Most of the streets were reopened late Friday night. Officials said that two dozen National Guard Soldiers were working with the State Highway Patrol to rescue stranded motorists near Asheville, which got about a foot of snow Friday.

9. one of the reasons that first thing we got when we moved in to our new home was a 18kw gennie

it runs everything but the central air, and we have a wood burning furnace for those situations, so far we have only used it suring summer storms but in conditions like this its a life saver....

Mayor of Boston. I'm in SW NH and we usually get creamed by these storms. This one missed us completely. Being an experienced "snow bounder" I recommend: relax, enjoy, don't travel and feed the birds.

13. that's my plan! We have enough firewood for the two woodstoves

out by the back door, we have a solar powered battery backup system to keep the well running, and the fridge, freezer, and living room powered. I have filled all 6 bird feeders and put out suet. We just checked the VDoT cameras again - the interstate and major roads are still only plowed one lane per direction. It will be a while before this clears.

But at least we have heat!!! I feel for the folks without power. It's 39 degrees outside right now./
