There's a certain mentality I just don't get.
It's the mentality that simply cannot abide that someone may legitimately disagree. It's the mentality that insists that anyone who does disagree is part and parcel of some evil cabal or has been bought off or is simply following marching orders or whatever.

It may come as a shock to some of you, but people can legitimately disagree.

1. Only if they are not "real Democrats" apparently
Even though the totality of my opinions more closely matches the party platform than that of many of the loudest voices for purity here, it seems I'm not a real Democrat because I'm not....well, like Nader or Camejo.

You KNOW that.

You also know that *I* know that.

You also know that many, many DUers know that.

Playing dumb only increases your projection.

in the OP. I suspect you know that. I can be cutting and nasty but I don't do what I'm referring to in the OP.

Many of us could come up with TONS of posts of yours to show the error of that statement.

Glad you are now admitting to cutting and nasty. Something to really be proud of. Not that you can deny it... waaaay too many witnesses.

17. I know your walls are up very high.
But a reasonable person would read the replies you're getting, and do some soul-searching.

Honesty may be outdated, but it is still a virtue.

7. Totally true.
Many people believe they are not just right, but self evidently right. Any "honest" person who looks at the facts would come to the same conclusion. So people who disagree with these self-evidently correct positions must either be dishonest, insane, or "haven't really looked at the facts."

8. This is like an extension of the thread about name calling we just had
This is pretty much what I'm talking about. If I disagree it's not because I'm a cheerleader or a bill-killer or whatever. I just disagree, but I do want to talk about why. The name calling is just eyeroll inducing.

14. Yes they can, but only when facts are in dispute. When you are handed apparent untruths
Then you simply can not buy into losing the argument. When misrepresentation, over- and under-statement become the norm, then it is impossible to admit defeat.

As a proud incrementalist, lots of people disagree with my posts as is their right.

I was a little taken aback at a few personal attacks, but Cloony said it best.

"We can't demand freedom of speech, then turn around and say, 'But please don't say bad things about us.' You gotta be a grownup and take your hits."

If I've got this straight, you're starting a thread to accuse those you disagree with of being part of a vast left wing-conspiracy with block liberal mentality that accuses those who disagree with them of being part of an evil cabal because they are following marching orders?

Or such as.. and maps for all U.S. Americans, or something..

26. Yes, but paid disagree-ers are a real thing in the viral marketing age.
Some people exhibit clear signs of not disagreeing honestly. When people disagree in a curiously over-the-top manner, and those vile terms that don't seem to belong here are shared by 30-50 other posters using the exact same verbiage, and those same people shift their arguments in the same way at the same time---it's pretty obvious.

Sadly, abused women and victims of bullies know that the assholery can't just be appeased or ignored.... it will escalate.

It seems Obama needs to learn this playground reality.

The logical end to that kind of thinking is re-education camps and repression of dissent.

39. Pause and reflect for a minute...
Look, I've been rather torn of late listening to your frustration and disillusionment. Empathy for the disappointed comes very easy for me, but I'm hardly virtuous when it comes to those who've been extremely derisive toward me. I get no satisfaction from this turn of events, but hopefully this, if taken sincerely, may be of some service.

You have often been precisely what you decry here: someone who demonizes those who disagree and grants herself the right to obliterate on a personal level those who contradict opinions of your erstwhile hero. You've started a couple of threads just recently that bemoan being personally insulted on the character level, showing true hurt, embarrassment and a feeling of being wronged.

Having fought many pitched and serial disputes with varied individuals on JUST THIS VERY LEVEL OF DISMISSAL, this is literally the definition of hypocrisy. Enough of all that, though; we all have streaks of that to us, and it's part of the human condition: seeing others as mere two-dimensional caricatures, while expecting others to realize the richly shaded complexity that is ME.

Think back on some of the harsher things you've said to slag and excommunicate others from the body communal here, and that should take some of the sting out of it. This isn't meant as a "serves ya right" exercise here, it's actually meant to take the sting out of it by showing how extremely harsh we as people can be.

One's value as a person isn't shown by how one behaves at one's birthday party, but by how one handles adversity. These are very disorienting times for many who truly fell for Barack Obama as a person, and much as I've taken my licks from them, I don't like seeing people's hopes dashed and I don't want to see the party fail.

If you can still see some of the drubbings you've dished out as short of savagery, then you should chill for a bit and take your licks with some calm fatalism; those who are treating you to this kind of abuse may also not be rotters to the core. These are hard times in the land of hope.

Some people argue and fight out of an ego-need to win. Some are shadow-boxing with past failures. Some have the aching need of the dispossessed to "belong" for once, and their counterparts need to be contrarians to continue the riff that everyone else is an idiot. Much of what happens in many arguments isn't about the subject matter at hand, but the self-image of the arguers, and this shouldn't be any kind of earth-shattering, front-page news.

People who are unable to deal with uncertainty run to religion and hero-worship and fight like demons to destroy views that don't square with their world-view. There's a deep fear and insecurity at play there, and those people are the first to make it personal because they feel that others will be vulnerable in just the same way they are: afraid of being around those who dislike them. It's meant to bark people away or cow them into submission. You're not going to win with them, and it's best to just write them off.
