Speak softly and carry a big stick.
Everything is not always as it looks from the outside. Did you think he gets in office, snaps his fingers, and we are magically transformed into a utopian society. It’s what makes us different from them that makes it harder for us. Liberals are free thinkers we don’t just fall in lockstep like they do. Surely that is evident from the divergent opinions we see expressed here. Our system was designed to make it hard to change.

If you were paying attention in the primaries and listened to him comment on when he decided he would run for president, you should not be too surprised at what has transpired. I can’t recall who the interviewer was but I will paraphrase the response of Obama when asked how he decided to run.

I really didn’t think I had a chance. I questioned whether people would believe I had the experience. I was on the verge of deciding I would not run. I then had a meeting with some of the party leaders. They told me in the life of every politician windows of opportunity exist. If you let them pass by they may never come again. They told me now was my time. They said a large enough percentage of the party was behind me. After careful deliberation and discussions with Michelle we decided I would enter the race.

In a little less than then 3 years you will go into a voting booth after hearing Obama say: We brought you health reform. We brought you the biggest jobs bill in history. We passed new banking and credit card reform. We are cutting our carbon footprint. We expanded educational opportunity. We brought you the cash for clunkers program that helped some of you buy a more affordable vehicle. We averted a total meltdown of the stock market. We put tougher restrictions on lobbyists. We thank God ours loved ones that were fighting in Iraq will be home for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Every one of those changes may have fallen short of what you as a free thinker would like. When you add them all up, I believe you will come to the decision that he’s done a pretty good job. That real change has occurred. That he has rejected the in your face vitriol politics that has dominated the recent past. That he adopted the mantra of one of histories greatest Presidents. That he has spoken softly and wielded a very big stick.
I believe you will size up the events of the last 4 years and cast your vote for Obama.

1. Can we throw "utopian" into the dumpster along with "realist" and "pragmatist"
Edited on Mon Dec-21-09 03:47 PM by Armstead
They are meaningless terms of derision.

Everyone -- whatever their position -- believes they are a realist. No one is demanding "Utopioa or Bust" and we all think our chosen approach is "pragmatic."

Accept that as a given.

5. Do tell
Some seem to be behaving as if we elected Dennis Kucinich. These folks need a reality check. I fail to see what pragmatic path those who are deserting Obama think they are on. Maybe you can explain it to me.
