Mexico City assembly legalizes same-sex marriage
AP

By E. EDUARDO CASTILLO, Associated Press Writer

MEXICO CITY – Mexico City lawmakers on Monday made the city the first in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage, a change that will give homosexual couples more rights, including allowing them to adopt children.

The bill passed the capital's local assembly 39-20 to the cheers of supporters who yelled: "Yes, we could! Yes, we could!"

Leftist Mayor Marcelo Ebrard of the Democratic Revolution Party was widely expected to sign the measure into law.

Mexico City's left-led assembly has made several decisions unpopular elsewhere in this deeply Roman Catholic country, including legalizing abortion in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. That decision sparked a backlash, with the majority of Mexico's other 32 states enacting legislation declaring life begins at conception.

The conservative Nation Action Party of President Felipe Calderon has vowed to challenge the gay marriage law in the courts. However, homosexuality is increasingly accepted in Mexico, with gay couples openly holding hands in parts of the capital and the annual gay pride parade drawing tens of thousands. ............(more)

1. In Mexico City, the new definition of marriage will be "the free uniting of two people."

6. True separation of Church and State
granted the Cardinal already came with the expected statement on family values and the values of Mexicans... but the Church has no say in the politics of the country, nor can they run, or get involved in politics. In fact, the Cardinal skirted the edge of it.

Yes, I am in Mexico City right now. Not to say that the right is not making noise. The PAN has promised to take this to the Supreme Court and on the basis of being unconstitutional due to lack of discussion, aka protections of the minority in legalese.

8. Now that's not entirely fair.
One could say this part about the United States, too:

"but the Church has no say in the politics of the country, nor can they run, or get involved in politics. In fact, the Cardinal skirted the edge of it."

However, we all know that there are ways of influencing politics that have nothing to do with literally running the government. The church influences the voters, and the voters influence the policy. I suspect that this is not the last we've heard of this. The RCC is not going to let this happen in Mexico without one hell of a fight, I guarantee it.

9. Yeah but Mexico has a history of religious wars
that the US does not. That is why the Cardinal skirted the edges of the law. Under the Pan the Church has gotten a little more bold, but they still watch it.

Now deep in the country side you may see things that you do not see in Mexico City, but something like the Family would be driven out so fast it is not even funny. Hell the Opus Dei, the equivalent, is far less vocal in Mexico than in the US.

Now I fear that the US may face something like the Guerras Cristeras, nothing like the Guerra de Reforma at one point or another. But in Mexico the President CANNOT enter a Church or any other religious Temple. This was ahem a problem a few decades ago when Portillo's daughter was married in the Cathedral. Dad had to look from the OUTSIDE.

For such a homophobic church, they sure wear wild clothes.
