re: "public option" and "no mandate" not being repeated campaign promises.

I have no idea, I'm utterly, totally flummoxed. Your thoughts?

2. He's lying and he's not particularly good at it.
Nowhere near as persuasive as Clinton.

3. Obama clearly said that a public option must be a part of any health care reform.
This was last summer.

Thanks a lot, Barack.

7. Saying isn't campaigning
Saying is only campaigning if you say something while touching your left earlobe. Or maybe winking.

18. Do you think 14,000 sliding scale communtiy
health clinics could be considered a public option???

Maybe you should read about THAT development...maybe.

That would be 280 per state, evenly divided - If adjusted for population......within striking distance of just about everyone.....

5. He is a politician
and he is giving a politician answer. I knew Obama was going to have a mandate in his healthcare legislation even though he said he wouldn't. Hillary was being honest about the healthcare legislation saying that it requires a mandate and she lost because of it.

You shouldn't take what politicians say in the campaigns so seriously. They will always promise more than they can deliver and they don't have the power to enact the legislation they want.

I believe he has his reasons for every decision he makes.
I may disagree with the decision, even if I knew his reasons, but I believe that he is being true to himself.
I do not believe he is a sell out.

8. I'd distinguish preferring vs demanding
If congress sent him a bill with a public option, he would have signed it. PO didn't have the votes, and he's not going to veto it. If he said he'd demand a public option or he'd veto whatever congress sent him, then I'd say lying... Though this, as with several hundred recent DU posts has me disturbed. Waiting for birther or impeach Obama posts to come next from the ever more troubling fringe.

12. That's pretty much my take on it as well.
I think he wanted it and would've signed legislation with it but would've also signed legislation without it (as he appears ready to do). I don't ever remember him saying that he'd veto it if it didn't have a PO. I think that he was more concerned about what the legislation did in terms of meeting the principles he outlined several times during the course of this whole process rather than being hung up on how exactly Congress got there.

13. "Spinning" is the word you are looking for
Which is of course fancy political speak for lying.

Yes Obama is lying. He campaigned for a better bill than he could've realistically achieved and now he is re-writing history, just like every other President does. Of course if he had said what the bill would probably look like after Congress ripped it to shreds, everybody would've voted for McCain because McCain would've just lied and promised something really rosy and wonderful.

When people want the government to do something but don't want to pay for it, politicians are going to lie to them and tell them that they can have their cake and eat it too when really that is impossible. Until people understand that, politicians are going to continue to lie to them.
