Officials: Guantanamo unlikely to close "until 2011 at the earliest"
New York Times (12-22-09): "officials now believe that they are unlikely to close the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and transfer its population of terrorism suspects until 2011 at the earliest — a far slower timeline for achieving one of President Obama’s signature national security policies than they had previously hinted."

12. They could have closed Gitmo in months if they wanted.
They clearly don't want to.

I think we all knew this was coming. Obama was stalling. So now the date is maybe 2011, and it will almost certainly slide backward from there.

So this will be one more thing Obama isn't going to achieve during his presidency. :(

2. Let's not rush into anything here
These dangerous criminals must be held, even if there's ZERO evidence against them.

Because..... well, just because. And if you disagree, you're... you're UNAMERICAN.

God bless the USA*

8. looks like the thompson prison won`t be sold till early next year..
the feds/military will build a new securtity fence around the present fence. by the time guards are hired and move into the area it will be around the 2011 time line.

9. Torture camps are such good things, why would they close them? BARF
It's unbelievable that the U.S. ever even entertained the idea of torture camps much less creating them and the leaving them open. This is a national disgrace as is the entire Obama's admin's response to the worst political criminals this country has ever seen.

16. While the January 22 deadline will be missed, Holder said
While the January 22 deadline will be missed, Holder said he wanted to make clear that "Guantanamo will be closed." Holder said he expected to go to the Illinois prison at some point to personally inspect efforts to make the facility more secure.

Holder's comments came the day after the administration announced that the federal government was buying the Illinois prison, and that some U.S. military trials for the detainees would be held there.

17. Gitmo WILL be closed
It's not like they're not working on it- and a lot of inmates have either been transferred or repatriated. To hear some people talking, you'd think that Obama is keeping it open indefinitely or something like it. I'm more mad at the NIMBY Dems in Congress whom previously supported its closure but are now hamstringing efforts to close it.
