If so surge supporters, say hi to Dick Cheney, John McCain and Karl Rove for me.

1. If you are arguing that Afghanistan is just one more piece of the
puzzle of empire, and that we are sending a military composed primarily of the nations poor to die fighting for "vital national interests" that primarily benefit the wealthy, then yes.

I have a confession: I want the U.S. to lose in Afghanistan. I want our imperialistic butts handed to us on a silver platter. We need to have the hubris knocked out of us. We need to realize that we can't use the military to solve all of our problems.

3. That's a pretty big confession
So you would like to see a lot of American soldiers in bodybags? I mean that is implied isn't it?

4. No, American soldiers in body bags isn't what I want
and failure in Afghanistan doesn't mean we take a lot of casualties, only that the mission fails. Unless our leaders are too stupid to see the obvious and they keep throwing bodies at the problem.

My son is scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan in Spring 2010. I have another son planning to join the Army, and if he gets the MOS he wants he is likely to end up in Afghanistan eventually.

America seems to be on a military kick, a cultural phenomenon very well described in Andrew J. Bacevich's book, "The New American Militarism." We are 5% of the world's population, but we do 50% of its military spending.

Regardless, I think my confession is somewhat irrelevant, since I really believe we are going to fail in Afghanistan. I still remember Lesson 1 from counterinsurgency training in the Marine Corps: "In the end, the insurgents always win."

2. Good point. A cheer leader is a cheer leader regardless of which uniform they wear.
