Poll question: Are DUers three times more likely to not have health insurance/coverage?
Edited on Wed Dec-23-09 09:39 AM by Motown_Johnny
Per this poll......

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=7301970&mesg_id=7301970

....in which 35% of DUers responded that they have no health insurance/coverage.

If you use the "39 million uninsured" number that gets floated around in the MSM, and the general population of the U.S. as 310 million you get an uninsured/uncovered percentage of 12.5%.

I know these polls can be inaccurate and that some DUers may even answer a poll question for dramatic effect and not for accuracy, but still the number seems high to me.

So let's try this again and make it simple this time, please answer accurately.

Do you have health insurance/coverage?

4. Come on, even if the poll was accurate, which it isn't, DU isn't a representative sample.

First, I highly doubt 35% of DUers don't have health insurance or some form of coverage. Just slightly more than 100 people voted in that poll and how many DUers are there (more than 150k according to the counter)? 2nd, even if it were true, the population here does not represent the general population. For example, it could be that many people *are* Democrats because they lack in the ability to obtain essential services like health care. Or, it could be that lack of health care drives one to be more vocal about it and post on DU and further answer polls posted on that particular forum.

New Study Finds 60 Million Uninsured During a Year
By ROBERT PEAR

WASHINGTON, May 12— Nearly 60 million people lack health insurance at some point in the year, the Congressional Budget Office said today, adding that official estimates fail to distinguish between people who lack coverage for a few months and those who are uninsured for a full year or more.

Members of Congress, administration officials, lobbyists and advocates often cite the Census Bureau when they declare that 41 million people have no health insurance.

But in a new report today, the budget office said the bureau's figure ''overstates the number of people who are uninsured all year,'' while significantly understating the number who are insured for only part of the year.

Add 7 more years of abuse, rescission and cherrypicking by ins. companies and a major recession/job loss to that number. I don't find 35% here on DU so hard to believe.

8. No and like everything we're told by "our government" 39M uninsured is a lie.
DU is a self-selected population, but it's size makes it fairly representative.

10. DU is going to skew a little because, iirc, the biggest group here
is comprised of white, middle aged, suburban women. (If I didn't get that right, please someone correct me.)

Women and that age group have to pay more for insurance in general, putting it out of the reach of some of us.
