7. My respect for this man is near boundless. |
|
It broke my heart that his focus and language was so narrow, as might be expected after a thrid of a centry in military service. It killed his chance at the Presidency. What a shame.

14. His focus and language ARE NOT AND WERE NOT NARROW. |
|
He was a Rhodes Scholar, and studied and taught economics at West Point. Among other things. The damned media's attention was (and probably is still) narrow. (Not yelling at you, but still frustrated, and hoping to inform folks here.)

16. Go listen to his interviews and speeches |
|
Look, I wanted that man for President. However anytime he spoke it was like a pep rally to the troops. I mean troops too. He was terrible, just terrible. Every single thing he said was like he was talking to 25 young sargents in a room. He used military language virtually all the time. Eveything was the mission, everything was presented within the frame of his military experience.
Now I know as well as anyone he was, and is, one of the best rounded. best educated, most intelligent, and easily most ethical man who has attached himself to our party since Jefferson, but there was no way on earth that he could every be accepted by the general public with his language. I just prayed some "consultant" would take him aside and tell him to do a makeover of all his refernences. For goodness sakes, all he would have had to do would have been to substitute his diplomatic experience for his military in references - that alone would have been enough, but he didn't do it.
And I still love the man. For any father to have raised such a son would be the finest compliment.

His only "mistake," if it was one, was not campaigning in Iowa. He did connect with people, was in the top two of many early-voting states, raised more funding than anybody but Dean and raised it faster -- the only thing that stopped him was what stopped everyone else: the momentum Kerry (and Edwards) got coming out of Iowa.
If only, if only, if only. :(

One of his (or someone's) foolish staff announced that prematurely.
And today he's putting together a Lionel train set with his grands!

he's the ONLY politician that's inspired me enough to volunteer in a campaign. (Well, if Bernie Sanders represented Maryland, I'd work for his campaign.)
I was constantly amazed at the diversity of people he attracted to his presidential campaign, from left and right. Even tho' he was in the Democratic party, he transcended the usual boundaries.
Wes is an amazing man. Happy birthday General!

He's a wise, honorable man who tells too many uncomfortable truths too often for his critics. (His endorsement even made me think about supporting Hillary Clinton last year)

20. I so wish he'd ran for POTUS.. |

My wife sat next to him on a plane from LA. He was going to see his grandkids in.. umm.. Phoenix, I believe?
She said he was the most personable yet whipcrack smart politician she'd ever had the chance to talk to.

He DID run for President, that is, he TRIED, and didn't make it thru the Primary debacle.
