Companies ranked on efforts to cut emissions

If you’re the kind of consumer who likes to think about the environment before making a purchasing decision, some advice is at hand, just in time for last-minute Christmas shopping.

Compiled by the nonprofit group Climate Counts, the survey of 90 big American companies found that most were addressing the issue, either by cutting their energy use, measuring their output of greenhouse gases, adopting policies to reduce emissions or pushing for federal legislation to do the same.

"We hear so much about how climate action is supposed to be bad for the economy, and I think companies are showing otherwise," said Wood Turner, executive director of Climate Counts. The organization, based in Manchester, N.H., encourages consumers to patronize companies that address climate change and pressure those that don't.
