I think I'm being monitored by the NSA
You know the pop ups you get at a website, where they scan your IP, figure out where you are and then you get a "chat invitation" saying something like: "From, sexysadie1987, Hey hot stuff, I'm in *Name of your current residence town* too, let's get together."?

I'm getting those, but they are coming back Laurel, Md. I live no where near Laurel. Not even in Maryland. But you know who is HQed in Laurel? NSA. Can anybody explain this? Talk me down!!!

5. Everything...
...is "monitored" by the NSA, and all other applicable "homeland security/law enforcement" agencies down the line. Whatever that means...?

It would do one well to conduct oneself on the internets as if everything one does is being broadcast live on youtube in real time.

To paraphrase Ari Fleischer, "you better watch what you say."

13. simple html pop-ups can determine your IP
Edited on Wed Dec-23-09 09:20 PM by DontTreadOnMe
don't be paranoid. Simple HTML scripts can auto detect your IP address.
Sometimes you will see the spam that indicates a town name based on your IP, and you will see sometimes it has to guess and the town is not your town, but a town that is right on the border. That means your IP address is shared by those two towns, so it just guesses one.

Every website manager can track hits on their sites, and identify the "geographical locations" of the users... all based on the IP address. It doesn't know your exact address, it stops at the "town" level. But your internet connection provider absolutely knows every click you have ever done on the internet, and they have that data saved - forever. If you are ever accused of a crime, they could go back and trace your every move on the internet and use it against you.

Or maybe they are watching you :)

Even Mapquest of all people display a map of where they think you are. When I'm at work, they think I'm in Phoenix, AZ... and display the map accordingly. Sorry guys, just my employers route all Internet traffic through Phoenix...

Mark.

i went to a williams sonoma online sale, and those ads show up more. i go to an adult site, and some banner shows up that someone close to me wants to 'chat'...ip addresses (which can be dervied from websites and stored in cookies for ad purposes) can contain geographical references...dont worry.

then again, don't look at stuff that is going to get you into trouble.

33. Is there the slightest doubt that it's a colossal waste?
The best & brightest people in the world work for Google & a few others, and with all of that effort it's still for shit. Why would anybody believe that there are viable new search technologies out there that are a secret, that nobody knows about?
