Howard Dean cites GOP opposition as reason to pass Senate health bill
Howard Dean, who last week claimed the Senate healthcare reform bill would do more harm than good, is warming to the measure that is expected to clear the upper chamber on Thursday.

During a Tuesday interview on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show,” Dean said, “Honestly, to see the Republicans up there carrying on the way they are, I basically concluded that maybe we should pass this thing … If the Republicans hate it, there must be some good to it.”

Dean’s softening position on the Senate bill started during an appearance on “Meet the Press” on Sunday, where he said he would not vote for the legislation “if this were the final product.”

On Tuesday, Dean reiterated his support for a public option, but acknowledged that the House-Senate conference bill is “unlikely” to include a government-run alternative.

1. Dr. Dean knows. Anyone siding with the 40 Republicans,
are de facto Republicans. Period.

Everything else is bullshit.

3. Guess this was said tongue in cheek, cause this makes no
sense at all. Dr. Dean appears to be a sensible person.

4. Dr Dean needs to stop flip flopping.
He was right to say the bill will do more harm than good. I wonder what he got offered.

12. No it doesn't. Their are many driving without insurance. That's
why you buy uninsured motorist insurance.

6. Sen. Boxer has been using this argument also. It makes no sense at all.
Edited on Thu Dec-24-09 09:22 AM by Motown_Johnny

The opponents of reform will always fight to have this bill move in their direction no matter how far it has already moved. The idea that they would get to a point and then stop fighting is clearly mistaken.

My crude analogy is....

After they have bent us over and had their way with us they now want us to go down on them too. Sen. Boxer and Gov. Dean are arguing that since they now want us to go down on them it means that they have not bent us over and had their way with us. (I cleaned that up as much as I could, feel free to use the vulgarities when quoting me if you like)

We need to ignore the opposition and focus on the bill itself. It is not a good bill but it is the best one that will pass right now. If the anti-trust exemption is dealt with in committee then it will be an acceptable bill, not a good one but an acceptable one.

since he became DNC chair (I know he isn't still the chair). He has shown himself to be very thoughtful, wise and a good team player.
