BOISE — A would-be Republican contender for an Idaho State Senate seat was arrested on a felony burglary charge Monday, according to Boise Police.

John O'Neal, 33, of Boise, who had announced he would be a candidate for the District 19 seat currently held by Democratic Sen. Nicole LeFavour, was arrested after witnesses said he attempted to leave a store without paying for several items. Officers believe O'Neal, who is also a 5th-grade teacher at Chief Joseph Elementary, entered the store with the intent to commit the theft resulting in the burglary charge.

Idaho Republican Party executive director Jonathan Parker confirmed O'Neal's intent to run for the District 19 seat.

1. If he were a Democrat, this would kill his candidacy
Since he's a Republican, he can try holding a press conference and announcing that Jesus has forgiven him.

3. Why is that not a shoplifting charge?

The story doesn't indicate whether he concealed the items--but that shouldn't make a difference.
