Soldier jailed for angry "Stop-Loss" hip hop song
Marc Hall jailed for angry 'Stop-Loss' Hip Hop song

By Courage to Resist. Updated December 22, 2009

Stop-lossed Army Specialist Marc Hall (aka Hip Hop artist Marc Watercus) was placed in the Liberty County Jail Friday, December 11 for speaking out against the continuing policy that has barred him from exiting the military, including recording an angry and explicit song. Servicemembers do not completely give up their rights to free speech, and certainly not when they do so artistically while off duty. However, the military intends to hold Marc in the county jail for months of pre-trial punishment before court martial. This could become a precedent setting case for boundaries of dissent within the ranks. Free Marc! Free speech! Free the troops from Stop Loss!

2. Actually, you DO lose some basic civil rights when you enlist. Thats why the UCMJ governs military
folks.

You DO lose some of your right to free speech. You are NOT allowed to speak out against your chain of command, on or off duty.

You DO lose some of your right to participate in protest. You may attend meetings but not in uniform and you may not be a leader or organizer.

There are many more things like that as well.

FYI, I was in the Navy for 21 years.....

3. Seems like
he was jailed for not wanting to redeploy, not for his dumb song.

reported don't seem quite right, including the use of a county jail.

6. Thanks for the post
I don't know enough about this to comment--will do more research on the case and the organization.

There is a dynamic equilibrium between a soldier's obligation to follow orders and his obligation to follow his moral compass. Who is right and who is wrong is generally decided by courts or by historians.

I served in the Marine Corps, and I always had a personal list of orders I knew I would refuse. Fortunately, I was never put in a position to have to refuse.
