Protect Women’s Access to Abortion in Health Care Reform (ACLU petition)
"The health care reform bills in both the Senate and the House include severe restrictions on women’s health. We must let our senators and representatives know that both provisions are unacceptable and must not be included in any final health care legislation.

"The Senate bill requires anyone purchasing an insurance plan covering abortion to write two separate checks for their insurance coverage – one to pay for the cost of the abortion services in the plan and another to cover other health care services. The House bill bans anyone who participates in the health care insurance exchange from buying a plan that covers abortion if they receive a federal subsidy. The framework of both bills is stigmatizing and ignores the reality that abortion is basic health care for women.

"Now, as the House and Senate prepare to reconcile the differences between their two bills, please tell your senators and representative to go back and get it right! The Stupak-Pitts abortion coverage ban in the House bill and the abortion restriction in the Senate bill are both unacceptable. We want health reform that will protect reproductive freedom, not put it in peril. Ask your senators and representative to protect women’s ability to make private health care decisions without government interference or read more first."

1. A lot of us are watching what the Democrats do on this very closely.
Very closely.

7. +1, this is the last straw for some.
Note to trolls: "Last straw" does not mean "single issue."

4. I'm one ACLU member who disagrees strongly with this strategy.
What they're asking for will kill the bill entirely. It will never get through the Senate if the abortion language is removed. We're better off passing the bill and fighting the anti-abortion measures in the courts.

21. Good luck fighting these in court
The separate check idea might not win in court, but the Stupak amendment? That language has been a fact of life for federal employees for years.

10. I signed. K&R
I'm 61 y/o and it was a hard fought battle to win a woman's right to reproductive freedom. I'm not about to roll over for the religiously insane.

11. For everyone going to the ACLU page to sign: Is my name, address, etc. showing there?
A fellow DUer e-mailed me to say it is, but they've been the only one so far. Are any of you noticing this?

16. I was told my info was still on the ACLU's petition page itself.
I've checked with a mod, and they told me they saw nothing; nor has anyone else noticed anything but a blank petition form. So I don't know; Admin is looking into it. In the meantime, I'm leaving the petition up and taking my chances.

18. Weird. Well, thanks for checking again. :)
The person who wrote tell me this wrote back again and gave me a brief idea of the info they'd seen; it wasn't mine.

Anyway, per a mod's advice, I e-mailed the ACLU and let them know that something may be hinky with their petition page. Hopefully it's nothing.

Thanks again for your help and support of the petition! Happy Holidays! :)

23. Actually, a bill establishing a single-payer National Health Plan...
would be fairly simple to write, even with 1000s of lawyers attempting to write some part of it.

The bill we almost have will be one of the most complex bills ever written.

We need a single-payer National Health Plan that covers all people in the country for their medical and med needs. Might as well add dental and vision care to the plan as well.

Some people enjoy taking baby steps. Others want a finished product from the start. I believe that few professionals will ever be able to unravel this wonder of Washington that we are getting...including most of us.

24. IIRC the Canadian law establishing Single-Payer is only a couple dozen pages long.
