2. I just added the outlook to the house. To overcome a 50 seat majority in the house |
|
and a 20 seat majority in the senate is not as easy as many who express displeasure with the HCR act think it is

But the Republicans overcame a larger House deficit in 1994 and they overcame a Senate majority that, while not as large as the one now, was still substantial.
And the Republicans beat incumbents that were thought to be unbeatable, seats that should have stayed Democratic and so forth.
This thing is coming close to critical mass. Whether or not a party keeps its majority in cycles like this is what it does in the year before the election year because people's opinion tend to harden by that spring and really don't change after that. This first year seems to have been squandered as the issue the people cared most about was put on the back burner while this plan, that does not have public support (and the Senate version of which ticks off the base) was made the priority to the point that they kept the Senate going till Christmas to pass it even though polls show by double digit margins Americans oppose this specific plan.
I think the U.S. Senate just gave plenty of ammunition to the GOP by voting that the government has the right constitutionally to force persons to buy products. Its non-binding but that is key campaign ammunition and give DeMint credit, it may be politics, it may be principle, but it sure as hell is smart tactics.

4. That's good - it means I am free to go back to the Green party |

or move further left and join the Peace and Freedom party.
Thanks - it's great news to know the lesser evil no longer needs my vote, or my campaign donations :)

9. That is just a different view from the belief that the Dems will lose the majority because of HC |
|
Anything can happen, but with an election a year a way, I find that prediction pretty shakey

24. Agree - you are either with them or against them |
|
so I am now against them and will fight against the centrist, realist, moderate, pragmatic neo-con-like democrats who don't need us and don't represent us and instead spend all their time playing kissy face with the far right wing of both parties. We are already factored out in their pragmatic ideology which embraces extreme mediocrity and a necessary political convenience.
It would just take one telegenic "moderate" republican and all those new Obama democrats will bolt back and vote republican again leaving Rahm and Obama abandoned and alone at their altar of their centrism.
Rahm Emanuel is assuming he can take us fro granted. Its a dangerous gamble.

6. Just CQ's guesses about what will happen a relatively long time |
|
from now. Maybe the public won't get the full text of the final HCR bill that the President signs until well after he's signed it, but the Rethugs will mine it for every possible nasty thing they can find.
Since the benefits of the bill won't really start for quite some time, they will certainly get traction out of it. I guess we'll see where that traction takes them.

8. That chart projects the Republicans gaining a Senate seat in 2010. |
|
Unless we lower the cloture threshold (to 55, for example) we'll be in even worse shape if the projections are accurate. Petition we can sign: http://stopsenatestalling.com/

In fact, I think it is unlikely they would lose the majority
However, I do agree with your position, and take it one step further, end the filibuster

solely based on an emotional event when the elections are a year away, is not really credible

17. Emotion is an asset, but it needs to be understood and managed |
|
There's still plenty of time for something to happen to make people rally around the flag and political approval ratings soar.
I think our ruling elite does a very efficient job of managing the emotions of the People. It's almost like they have consultants or something like that to help them do it. Nahhhh, they wouldn't do that.

My dog is a 90-pound working-bred German shepherd named Bruno. He has a quiet confidence about him that unnerves other dogs, and he's a gentle giant watching confidently over my family. In 2007, in the woods by the river behind my house, I was charged by a brown ("grizzly") bear, and Bruno, only a 13-month-old pup at the time, charged in and put himself between the bear and me, finally convinced the bear to retreat. Ten minutes later, we were back at my house, and while I told my wife the story, Bruno played gently with our 5-pound Chihuahua as nothing dramatic had happened.
No, my dog isn't better than your dog. Every dog is special.
I wish people were as good.

25. I do think the Democrats are going to lose in 2010. |
|
Edited on Thu Dec-24-09 07:03 PM by Marr
First, information takes awhile to percolate through the public. I think a lot of the people who are *going* to be very disillusioned about this Healthcare issue haven't become really aware of the situation just yet, let alone become angry about it.
Second, I see no reason to expect that this government is going to change it's approach over the course of the next year. Current hard feelings will only get harder, and more people will be pissed off by decisions like those made to this point. I'm sure they'll toss out a contrived little wedge issue fight for next year, but I don't think that's going to do much good in an economy like this.
We'll see, I suppose. I don't expect a replay of '94 in the House or anything, but I do expect Democrats to be weakened in both houses.
